Friday, April 19, 2024 @ 10:11 AM |
The CMU Women's Basketball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Gina Maher for the 2024-25 MCAC and NIAC seasons. The Vincent Massey Collegiate signing is ready to take her game to the college level after stellar high school and club careers.
The second signing of the week from Vincent Massey Collegiate, joining women's volleyball recruit Imani Rhoden, Maher enjoyed a very successful run as a Trojan, winning the Tier 1 Championship three consecutive seasons en route to Provincial Championship runs. In her grade ten season Maher and the Trojans were MHSAA "AAAA" Provincial Championship finalists, and it was her junior varsity coach, Adam Kahn, who Maher credits with giving her the confidence to make her believe she could succeed. Her two varsity seasons at Massey her team reached the Provincial Championship Final Fours, narrowly edged by Garden City for the chance to play in the title game on both occasions. Of the four tournaments her Massey squad entered this season, the team medalled in all four, including two tournament titles at the Sisler Spartan Classic, and the Buckeye Classic at Miles Macdonell. Maher recently came off an appearance at the MHSAA "AAAA" Graduating All-Star game, playing with and against the top competition in Manitoba. When she's not on the court representing the Trojans in basketball, Maher also suits up for the school's team handball program, as well as the track and field team, where she competes in the sprint disciplines, and hones her speed and agility training with those sports.

The CMU Women's Volleyball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Imani Rhoden for the 2024-25 MCAC season. The Vincent Massey Collegiate product is continuing her volleyball journey with the CMU Blazers after suiting up for the WVA Blazers for her final club season.
Coming off her final season of high school volleyball at Vincent Massey Collegiate here in Winnipeg, her Trojans team saw considerable success throughout the season with a number of final four tournament appearances, but made a second round exit at the MHSAA "AAAA" Provincial Championships late in 2023. However, the team went the distance in the Manitoba championships in her first year of varsity, eventually falling in the Provincial title game to the Sturgeon Heights Huskies; a team that featured current women's volleyball student-athletes Chelsea Stewner and Bronwyn Holroyde. She featured both as a left side and a middle with the Trojans throughout her time at Vincent Massey, and has seen action in plenty of big games already. Rhoden credits her high school coach Mandy Wolf for her development both as an athlete and as a person, which she looks to continue under Blazers head coach Jayme Menzies.

With the MCAC seasons now over, and all the individual and team awards handed out at last month's Green and Gold Banquet, Blazers Athletics would like to once again recognize three top-tier student-athletes from our ranks who brought their teams to the next level and were recognized nationally for their efforts on the field of play.
A full member of the CCAA since the 2021-22 season, when a spot at the National Championships in the sports of women's and men's soccer as well as women's and men's volleyball were opened for MCAC Championship-winning teams, 2022-23 marked the first year that MCAC athletes became eligible for the association's major awards. Each CCAA-participating MCAC sport is eligible for two All-Canadian awards, which go to the top two student-athletes in All-Conference voting; the Player of the Year and runner up, as voted by the conference's coaches. In last year's inaugural class, a CMU athlete received All-Canadian status for the first time, as Matheus Aquino of men's soccer was selected for the award.

The CMU Women's Soccer program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Keirra Desrosiers for the 2024/25 MCAC season. The Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Canadienne will take her talents across town from the East End to Tuxedo to suit up for the Blazers this fall.
A multi-sport student-athlete, Desrosiers represents her high school Canadiennes during both the outdoor and indoor soccer seasons as well as on the hardcourt with the varsity girls volleyball team. College Pierre-Elliott Trudeau competes at the "AAA" level of Manitoba High School Sports Athletics Association, but managed to punch above their weight class during the most recent WYSA indoor season when the team lost to the eventual winners in the semi-finals of the Championship Division. She has been nominated for a number of awards through school sports, ranging from athletic to leadership to academic merit, so it's quite clear the Blazers are bringing in another complete package student-athlete into the program with Desrosiers.
