Evelyn Kampen Memorial Scholarship for Women's Volleyball
Honouring a life of excellence, perseverance, and generosity of spirit
The Evelyn Kampen Memorial Scholarship for Women's Volleyball was established to honour the remarkable life and athletic legacy of Evelyn Kampen (1989–2025)—a CMU alumna, elite athlete, coach, mentor, and cherished member of the volleyball community.
Evelyn graduated from Canadian Mennonite University in 2012 and left an indelible mark on CMU Athletics and on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. As a teammate, coach, and personal trainer, she embodied determination, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to others. This scholarship ensures that Evelyn's passion for volleyball and her belief in the potential of young women athletes continues to inspire future CMU Blazers.
About Evelyn
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Evelyn was a gifted multi-sport athlete whose love for competition and movement began at a young age. While she excelled in many sports, volleyball became the arena where her talent, drive, and character shone most brightly.
After completing her high school career at River East Collegiate, Evelyn began her university career with the Trinity Western Spartans. Evelyn returned home in 2009 to play for the CMU Blazers and during her time at CMU she emerged as one of the most dominant players in the Manitoba Collegiate Athletic Conference. Evelyn helped lead the Blazers to two Western Canadian College Championships and an MCAC title, and she was named MCAC Most Valuable Player three consecutive years (2010–2012). She also holds CMU's record for kills in a single match.
Following graduation, Evelyn became the first CMU athlete to move on to a professional volleyball career, competing overseas in Germany and Denmark. She later returned to CMU as head coach of the women's volleyball team, where her leadership and vision helped re-energize the program and culminated in an MCAC championship in 2017.
Beyond the court, Evelyn was deeply committed to holistic well-being. She worked as a campus well-being coordinator, coached at the provincial level, and earned credentials as a certified personal trainer with nutritional accreditation. Known for her resilience, she continued to compete and coach at a high level while managing a chronic condition—quietly modelling courage and perseverance for those around her.
Evelyn passed away on February 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Élise Marie, her parents Art and Nadine Kampen, her family, and a wide community of teammates, athletes, and friends whose lives were shaped by her encouragement and example.
