Kalyssa Wasylik: September's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Kalyssa Wasylik of Blazers Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for September. The veteran winger has made a triumphant return to the outdoor pitch this fall.

After taking the outdoor season off last autumn but returning to the squad for the indoor futsal season, Kalyssa Wasylik looks to have regained her form on the turf, using her speed and skill on the ball to give the opposition defenders fits throughout the first half of the MCAC schedule. The Blazers' leading point-getter sits just ahead of rookie teammate Sumeet Brar in the conference statistical leaders chart, both of whom have tallied two goals on the season so far. Wasylik has shown a proficiency of creating scoring chances from open play, cutting in from the wing on the dribble for a chance on goal, or creating on through balls to teammates in space.

Wasylik played an integral part in the Blazers' win over the St Boniface Rouges at home on September 18th, opening the scoring, and then assisting on the game-winner, earning herself player of the game honours. That win has been part of the difference in the Blazers climb up the standings to currently sit third in the MCAC table. This past weekend Wasylik added another set of goals and assists in the team's match against the Cougars when she got the ball on goal to be cleaned up by teammate Leila Varias, before adding to CMU's lead with a goal of her own into a strong wind at the Ralph. First-year head coach Jason Moist was happy to have the veteran back in the lineup this year adding talent and experience to his strong incoming class. "Kalyssa has had an outstanding start to the season," notes the program's skipper. "Her ability to play a key role on the wing and as a centreback option has demonstrated her importance to the team both in the attack and defensively. Her consistency in getting the ball forward and being an attacking threat has been phenomenal; she has the ability and potential to do something special every time she has the ball at her feet."

Now entering the final stage of the regular season with one game against each opponent remaining after this coming weekend's away date with the Bobcats, the Blazers hope to capture some critical points towards playoff positioning at the MCAC Championships, which the MCAC is hosting indoors at the South Soccer Complex at the U of M, as well as the North Complex on Leila the final week of October. The team that takes home the MCAC title will also earn a spot at this year's CCAA National Championships, hosted by Victoria Island University in Nanaimo, BC.
