MCAC Delays Restart on the 2021-22 Season
Wednesday, January 12, 2022 @ 10:37 AM |
The second half of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) season, which was set to resume play this weekend following the holiday break, has been paused for the next two weeks, with the new restart date tentatively scheduled for January 28th.
The decision comes on the heels of skyrocketing COVID-19 case numbers amidst the Omicron variant wave firmly hitting the province. Although Provincial health restrictions do not prohibit the playing of sporting events, the resumption of studies in an online format for many schools, including CMU, would have sent mixed signals about concerns about student safety. "The health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fans is foremost in our minds as we reached this decision" commented MCAC Executive Director, Shane Ray. "While public health orders allow the continuation of the season, this pause is one way the conference can contribute to the ongoing battle against COVID."

The Raiders are sitting in second place in the top Premiership tier, with an undefeated 6-0-2 record heading into the playoff round which is set to begin in January. Congratulations to Cam Gayleard of Men's Volleyball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for November. The second-year captain of the Blazers was consistently a top performer for the Blazers as they began their season, and continues to show growth both on and off the court.
After a breakout rookie season in 2019-20 when he helped the Blazers to their MCAC Championship win as a first-year starter, Cam Gayleard has shown no sign of a sophomore slump. Now in his second year of eligibility, but third year with the team after the cancelled 2020-21 season, Gayleard leads a rookie-heavy squad as the backbone of the Blazers' attack. Now with a 5-3 record on the season, enough to place CMU second in the standings, Gayleard looks to lead the Blazers into a huge matchup with the first place Providence Pilots before heading into the Christmas break.

Week 12 of the MCAC schedule had all four active varsity teams on the road for weekend series; Blazers volleyball visited the Assiniboine Cougars in Brandon for a two-game set, while the basketball squads headed to Southern Manitoba for two dates with the Providence Pilots.
Friday night was a big night for Blazers Athletics as the women's volleyball team played their first match of the season at the site of the 2022 MCAC Volleyball Championships. Their matchup was with a struggling Cougars squad, who had yet to win a set through six games played going into the match. The Blazers had no plans to be the first team to drop a set to ACC and rolled to a straight-sets victory 25-14, 25-18, 25-17, looking like a team bent on holding their second place spot in the Manitoba conference rankings. Head Coach Jayme Menzies utilized a number of her players in the win, but got the biggest contributions from rookie left sides Rachel Bartel and Halle Meisner, as well as rookie middle Annika Kornelsen, who displayed her athleticism on a number of offensive sequences, running steps and then finishing the rally with a block.
