MCAC Votes For January Start Over Previously Scheduled Season

The Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference met on Friday, voting in a newly planned 2020-21 volleyball schedule that would begin play on January 15th rather than the previously scheduled volleyball season due to start play in November.
Many factors led to this inevitable decision, none more critical than the current stage of the approved return-to-competition plans in the sport.

Time off from the MCAC schedule has given a new opportunity for CMU varsity teams to focus their attention on personal and community development. Members of the women's volleyball, basketball and soccer programs began October by spending three days on campus in Marpeck Commons, requesting donations of hygiene products in support of Winnipeg's North End Women's Centre (NEWC).

The announcement coming from Manitoba Public Health on Friday afternoon, that the Winnipeg region would be placed in "Code Orange" effective Monday, September 28 for a minimum of four weeks, all but spelled the end of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference's plan for a reduced, 4-game soccer season.
Yesterday, the MCAC's directors voted unanimously to announce the cancellation of the seasons. Winnipeg was placed in "Code Orange" by the province in hopes of reducing the spread of the coronavirus after positive test results have regularly exceeded 40 new cases daily since mid-September. "Code Orange" requires people living in the region to wear masks in all public spaces and limits public gatherings to a maximum of 10 people.

The athletes have spoken and the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) has listened, deciding last Friday to prolong their decision date to September 16th pertaining to the playing or cancellation of the 2020 soccer season.
The MCAC is one of only two Canadian post secondary athletics conferences still working at plans for a 2020-21 season that would have competitions this fall. Most leagues made early decisions in the spring to cancel 2020-21 seasons due to the pandemic, leaving many athletes undecided as to whether to return to school in September.

The countdown is on to the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference's 2020 kickoff and with their first matches being just over a month away, CMU has received the commitment of Waterloo United u18 striker Tim Shantz. Described by his club coach, Rafael Amaya as a "motivated and hard-working young man", Shantz led his "A" class youth team in goal productivity last season and will bring his speed, dribbling ability and confident finishing skills to Manitoba in 2020.
