New Men's Volleyball Signing Has Versatility in Spades

Don Dulder continues to strengthen his squad prior to the 2021-22 MCAC men's volleyball season by announcing the commitment of Westgate Mennonite Collegiate libero, David Nelson. Dulder is really happy to add another outstanding defender and a player who the veteran head coach noted, "has a strong understanding of what's going on around him because of the experience he has had playing all over the court in high school and club."

During his four years at Westgate, Nelson helped the Wings to a third-place finish at provincials while playing as a left-side attacker. The following year, Nelson played as a middle for the Wings to fill the team's positional void. The Wings went on to win the SCAC zone championships and the junior varsity provincial crown, while Nelson was rewarded for his versatility with a provincial all-star recognition.

In his final season for high school volleyball in 2019, Nelson and the Wings would do it all over again, winning SCAC and provincials but now at the 'AAA' varsity level. This season Nelson played as a left-side and was again selected as a provincial all-star.

"David brings a great deal of passion and determination to the court," said Dulder. "He is a very intelligent young man who has had great coaching at Westgate and at the club level too. He is really excited to be coming to CMU and we are very confident that he will fit right in with our group of players."

Nelson began his first three years of his club career playing at left-side and at setter with a Winman team that would finish 9th at the Canadian National Championships in 2018. Since, Nelson has moved to 204 volleyball club, playing at setter, left-side and libero.

The Blazers hope a trip to the CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championships are on their horizons for 2022. The forthcoming season marks the first official opportunity for the winners of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference to move on past their regional championship and represent Manitoba on a national stage. The MCAC was accepted into the CCAA in 2018 and after two years of probationary member status, 2021-22 will stand as the year that all the benefits of the national affiliation commence.

The MCAC winners will meet the champions of the PacWest (BC), ACAC (Alberta-Sask), OCAA (Ontario), RSEQ (Quebec) and ACAA (Atlantic), along with two wildcard teams and the hosts, College Limoilou in Quebec City next March.
