Safety First: Varsity Athletics in the Midst of a Pandemic

Despite the cancellation announcements coming from most Canadian university and college athletic conferences, CMU and the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC), are indeed moving forward with plans to compete in soccer, volleyball, basketball and futsal.

"As a province, Manitoba has handled this pandemic extremely well so far and with most of our MCAC campuses planning to be open for students with hybrid models of course delivery (in-person and online), we feel quite confident that we can deliver a safe environment for our athletes to return to training and league competitions," said CMU Director of Athletics, Russell Willms.

Former Rebels MVP Brings Pedigree To Already Strong CMU Squad

A former Red River Rebels Most Valuable Player and a 2017-18 MCAC All-Conference selection, Alex Castro has signed his letter of intent to wear green and gold this season where he will reunite with several former teammates including CMU head coach Anderson Pereira.

A product of the FC Northwest youth system, Castro and the Winnipeg-based club represented Manitoba in 2012 and brought home a National u18 Championship. After graduating from Sisler High School in 2013, the versatile technician spent two years at Red River College with the Rebels, one of those seasons in the same roster as his new head coach, where he impressed.

The newest Blazer, Annika Kornelsen is an athletic 5'8 outside hitter from Winnipeg's Glenlawn Collegiate.

Women's Volleyball Welcomes Sturgeon Heights Middle Ridd

The CMU Blazers are very happy to announce the commitment of Sturgeon Height's Collegiate's Faith Ridd for the 2020-21 MCAC season. Perhaps the 5'11 middle attacker's greatest success came at the 15-u level when she guided her Junior Wesmen club team to a 4th place finish at the Canadian National Championships. In her final season with the Junior Wesmen, Ridd captained her team to another strong performance at Nationals; this time a 10th place finish.

Women's Basketball Makes Signing Splash With Dynamic Jimmies' Guard

The defending 2020 NIAC Women's Basketball Champions scored another big addition for their 2020-21 roster this week, with the commitment of 5'10 St. James Collegiate guard Briana Ehrmantraut.

Often playing point guard on offense and guarding their opponent's biggest post player defensively, Ehrmantraut's senior year at St. James marked the most successful year for the Jimmies in over 13 years. The West Winnipeg high school finished first in WWAC Tier 2, defeating high-powered Westwood Collegiate in the quarterfinals and topping rivals John Taylor Collegiate in the 2020 Championship after a remarkable 12-0 campaign.
