Good Times for the Blazers During Reading Week

Good Times for the Blazers During Reading Week

This past week marked the fall reading break for CMU students, but the Blazers basketball and volleyball teams were still in session and enjoyed some good times during their time off from classes.

The lone MCAC action for the Blazers on the week was a Saturday matinee matchup with the Assiniboine Cougars on the volleyball court at the Loewen Athletic Centre.  Prior to the match, your Blazers women's volleyball squad was sitting in third place in the MCAC standings with a 1-2 record, just above the 0-3 Cougars.  A rookie-heavy lineup took the court for CMU, with rookie setter Paige Wright controlling the offence for the entirety of the match.  Two tight set wins for the Blazers had the tensions pretty high in the Loewen before things fell apart for the winless Cougars and CMU cruised to a 3-0 victory, improving their record to 2-2 on the season.  Standouts for the Blazers were the left side tandem of rookies Halle Meisner and Rachel Bartel who notched 11 and 8 kills respectively for the team in the quick victory.  Add to that five aces each from the service line, and 18 digs in the backcourt for Bartel and you have the recipe for an all-around win.  A win by St Boniface over the Providence Pilots in the other MCAC matchup on the weekend puts the Blazers in a tie for second place on points with the Pilots, with the advantage on sets won/lost going the Blazers way at this early point in the year.

Ball Gets Rolling on MCAC Court Seasons

It was a full weekend of games for the Blazers volleyball and basketball teams, who started their MCAC seasons in earnest following the conclusion of the MCAC soccer championhips last weekend.

Friday's home basketball events marked the home debut of CMU's new Treaty One uniforms.  Designed with the help of indigenous artist Amber Green, and produced by local buseness Zueike, both basketball and volleyball teams' new home uniforms acknowledge the land that CMU stands on as Treaty One Territory.

John Taylor Product Looks Good in Green and Gold

CMU Women's Basketball is very happy to announce the commitment of John Taylor Collegiate's Jessica Routsis for the 2021-22 NIAC and MCAC seasons.  The versatile 5'8 guard comes to CMU brimming with passion for the game made evident by her impact role as an underage player on her high school Pipers teams.

Despite not being able to compete in her graduating season, Routsis comes to the Blazers with leadership potential, having captained her high school varsity squad in her grade 11 year, when she earned MVP and Player of the Game honours in her team's playoff run to the WWAC Conference finals at the 'AAA' level.  Not surprisingly, she was also named to the league all star team after her John Taylor Pipers' fantastic showing at the championships.

Graduate Profile: Jessica Marx-Houndle, Women's Basketball

Few players make a bigger impact on the success of a program than Jessica Marx-Houndle has done at CMU for her women's basketball team. Arriving in 2016, Marx-Houndle was part of an elite recruitment class that brought the Blazers back to the top of the MCAC after a seven-year championship drought. Marx-Houndle played a big part in that win, earning MVP honours. Future years saw the 5'8 Westwood Collegiate-product lead CMU to two more Manitoba banners and even more successes south of the border, when the Blazers stepped into the NIAC conference and in just their third season, claimed their first championship in 2020.
