Coaches Sing Blazers Women's Basketball Recruit Wynne's Praises
Wednesday, May 4, 2022 @ 12:55 PM |
The CMU Women's Basketball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of combo guard Madeline Wynne for the 2022-23 MCAC and NIAC seasons. The Daniel McIntyre product comes to CMU hoping to make her mark in the Blazers' lineup this year.
Wynne will trade in her DMCI maroon for the Blazers' green and gold this upcoming season, but her high school career has given her plenty of success already, with her Maroons squad having been named champions of their Winnipeg conference, and entered the 2022 AAAA Provincial championships as the second seed in the tournament. In her COVID-shortened grade 10 junior varsity season Wynne was named a conference all-star, and was recognized again this season as a provincial graduating all-star.

The CMU Women's Basketball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of point guard Elizabeth Ikizakubuntu for the 2022-23 MCAC and NIAC seasons. The Fort Richmond Collegiate product comes to CMU with high hopes for making an immediate impact on the program.
Elizabeth Ikizakubuntu joins CMU Blazers Athletics as part of a steady stream of Fort Richmond Collegiate grads to join the ranks over the past number of seasons, and will look to fill the shoes of outgoing graduate, and defensive all-star point guard Shirliz Apiyo, herself a former Fort Richmond Centurion. The Centurion to CMU connection has been strong in recent years, starting with Apiyo, who joined the Blazers in 2017, and also includes Blazers soccer captains Tiegan Kroeker and Will Anderson, as well as 2020 men's volleyball recruit Felix Stetefeld, along with his teammate Duncan Petrie who joined the Blazers for the 2021-22 season as just a few examples of current CMU student-athletes that were once Centurions.

Week 12 of the MCAC schedule had all four active varsity teams on the road for weekend series; Blazers volleyball visited the Assiniboine Cougars in Brandon for a two-game set, while the basketball squads headed to Southern Manitoba for two dates with the Providence Pilots.
Friday night was a big night for Blazers Athletics as the women's volleyball team played their first match of the season at the site of the 2022 MCAC Volleyball Championships. Their matchup was with a struggling Cougars squad, who had yet to win a set through six games played going into the match. The Blazers had no plans to be the first team to drop a set to ACC and rolled to a straight-sets victory 25-14, 25-18, 25-17, looking like a team bent on holding their second place spot in the Manitoba conference rankings. Head Coach Jayme Menzies utilized a number of her players in the win, but got the biggest contributions from rookie left sides Rachel Bartel and Halle Meisner, as well as rookie middle Annika Kornelsen, who displayed her athleticism on a number of offensive sequences, running steps and then finishing the rally with a block.

Tough out-of-province competition in early season exhibitions has paid early dividends for the Blazers basketball squads, as they remain perfect in MCAC action through their first three weekends of play.
Now back in Manitoba for the remainder of the season, the Blazers basketball teams tipped off with their second home matches of the season in a home-and-home weekend with the St Boniface Rouges. Coming off a huge blowout win in their previous meeting, Blazers women's basketball gave the home crowd another show, throwing up 106 points on Friday night, and earning them their third win in conference play of the young season. Scoring came from across the lineup, with second-year Reyna Reyes leading the pack with 17 points, including nine from beyond the arc, along with rookies Oluwanifemi Gbadamosi, Annika Goodbrandson, Emily Townsend, and Maizy Lawson who all hit double-digits points in the game.
