Daniel Cameron: January's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month
Tuesday, February 6, 2024 @ 4:43 PM |
Congratulations to Daniel Cameron of Blazers Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for January. The sophomore forward has been the most consistent performer on a team looking for both MCAC and NIAC success this season.
With the final standings in MCAC to be determined after this weekend's games, and NIAC standings next weekend when the Blazers finish their conference schedule in Bemidji, Minnesota, head coach Scott Martin is hoping for more dominance from his second-year forward. "Daniel is relentless and plays at a high level every game," notes the head coach, who is in his fifth year leading the program. His teams have shown flashes of brilliance before, but this year the squad looks poised for a deep playoff run, thanks in part to the passion and persistence Cameron brings to the floor.

Congratulations to Cameron Gayleard of Blazers Men's Volleyball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for November. The fourth year left side captained his team to a perfect record to start the season.
From the time he first stepped onto the court in a Blazers uniform in the fall of 2019, Cameron Gayleard has been the kind of player a team can rely on game in and game out to be a consistent performer, and the Selkirk product has started this season no differently. Gayleard has been the definition of a lead-by-example captain, putting in extra hours of practice, time in the gym, and in the classroom, all leading to his high performance on the court. The two-time CCAA Academic All-Canadian currently sits in the top MCAC leaderboards in a number of offensive categories, including leading the conference in service aces per set, while also sitting top three in total kills and kill efficiency. Gayleard also routinely leads his team in passing percentage, showing that he works on all aspects of his game.

Congratulations to Julia Sawatzky of Blazers Women's Volleyball on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for November. The second year outside hitter has stepped up in a big way to start the season for the Blazers.
Sawatzky showed flashes of brilliance last year for CMU in her rookie season, when she featured primarily on the right side, but the Dakota Collegiate product has worked hard to round out her game and has been used as part of a left side attacking tandem for the green and gold this season, giving her more opportunity to shine. At the end of league play for the first half of the season, Sawatzky is the first and only MCAC attacker thus far to tally 100 kills, and currently leads the league leaderboard in that category. Not only does she rank highly in total kills, but her efficiency stats also land her top three in the conference, meaning she is among the league's best in converting attacking opportunities to kills. It's not surprising then that Sawatzky has had a number of monster offensive games this semester, but has also shown incredible consistency, leading the Blazers in kills in eight of the team's nine games this half.

Congratulations to Osama Ali of Blazers Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for October. The rookie striker gave opposition defenders fits all season with his speed and relentless pursuit of the ball.
Known to his coaches and teammates as 'Ronaldo,' the speedy striker's commitment to bettering his game on and off the pitch makes the comparison more than a nominal nod to the shared number seven on the jersey. Ali finished the season in a tie for the team lead in goals with four, and added the Blazers' lone tally in their MCAC Championships semi-final match. It was a strong finish to the season overall for the green and gold, with the team taking points in four of their six games down the stretch of the regular season, including two wins and a draw against the eventual MCAC Champions Brandon Bobcats.
