Women's Volleyball Overpowered In Semis By Top Ranked Wesmen

MCAC teams combined for only two wins all season against the conference's top-seeded University of Winnipeg College Wesmen and there were no surprises this afternoon as the fourth-ranked Blazers succumb to a 3-0 semifinal exit (25-19, 25-18, 26-24).
The match was not without hope of an upset as several players in the CMU rotation stepped up at key moments of the match. Recently named 2016 MCAC All-Conference selection Kim Town made an early impression on her team's first possession, pounding a kill from right side and following that with an ace from the service line to give her team a 2-0 lead in the first set. Jocelyn Bartos scored two aces of her own for the College Wesmen late in the set to give Winnipeg a 23-16 advantage that they would not look back on.

The Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference released their selections to the 2016 Men's Volleyball All-Conference team on Wednesday afternoon and leading the way were CMU's rookie outside hitter John Nieckarz and third-year left side Joel Kliewer.
Playing mostly left-side in his first season at CMU, Nieckarz has made a big impact on the MCAC after spending the 2014-15 season as a red-shirt for the University of Manitoba Bisons. Now with the Blazers, the 6'4 product of River East Collegiate has shown his pedigree by leading his team in total kills (149), kills per set (2.92) and in kill percertage (40.8%). Nieckarz has also unleashed his powerful jump serve on the MCAC, to the tune of 25 aces.

As the 2015-16 MCAC Volleyball season focusses for its final weekend of competition, the conference has announced it's selection of the Women's Volleyball All-Conference Team and not be be overlooked in CMU's rookie middle blocker Kim Town.
Town led her team to a much improved record of 8-12, good for a fourth-place finish and a trip back to the MCAC Final Fours after the Blazers missed out on the 2015 Playoffs. The 6'1 native of southern Ontario burst into the CMU rotation this season, leading her team in service aces and stuff blocks and providing leadership and energy to an improving roster.

Jon Hayter sunk "the shot heard 'round the province" against the #2 Providence Pilots in Saturday's MCAC Men's Basketball semifinal with 4.4 seconds left on the clock to give CMU a 67-66 win, but the tides turned on the Blazers on Sunday when they faced the defending seven-time champs in the MCAC Final.

The only team to defeat the Blazers this year in conference play did it again on Sunday afternoon as the Red River Rebels claimed their the 2016 MCAC Women's Basketball Championship on home court.
CMU entered Final Four weekend boasting a near perfect 11-1 regular season record and cruised into the big game after their swarming full-court defense eliminated the fourth place College Wesmen, 67-22 in Saturday's semifinal. In the other semi, the Rebels were pushed by the third-seed Providence and only a flawless second half allowed the defending champions to come from behind to knock off the Pilots 58-45 and book their place in the final.
