Young And Undersized, Men's Basketball Has Something To Prove In Minnesota
Thursday, November 8, 2018 @ 2:02 PM |
"Hungry" might be the best word to describe the CMU Blazers Men's Basketball team as they embark on their first regular season road trip of the NIAC season. A 2018-19 preseason that ended without a win and a largely new roster of players, this will be a season where the Blazers will be underdogs and they know it.
Removed two seasons from their famous MCAC Championship win, no member of the current squad was there in 2017 to taste provincial glory with head coach Billy Isaac and his long time assistant, Dan Neufeld. Seth McKenzie, Riley Ens, Erik Sinclair and Nathan Rogalsky, who redshirted last season, make up the full cast of returning players and there is a lot riding on their young shoulders as second-year leaders on the team.

After losing the first two sets of the 2018-19 MCAC Regular Season, Women's Volleyball showed their resilience in front of a boisterous home crowd by winning the third and fourth and then came back from an 8-10 deficit in the fifth to defeat USB 15-12, winning the match 3-2.
Fourth-year power, Haley Ginter pumped 13 kills for CMU while rookie middle Mackenzy Groot scored 7, leading her team with a 54.5% kill efficiency.

Congratulations to Will Anderon of Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month for October. The first-year midfielder quietly went about his work anchoring the Blazers midfield from the bottom of the four-man diamond. The product of Winnipeg's Bonivital Soccer Club and Focus 9 Soccer Academy, Anderson's technical and tactical abilities are his strengths but it is his ability to read the play that allows his teammates the freedom to push forward to attack while providing them cover defensively.

Congratulations to Naomi Klassen of Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Lionheart Sports Female Athlete of the Month for October. The fourth-year midfielder was much of an unsung hero in her team's starting eleven this season. Making key distribution decisions in the attack as she linked play from the defenders to the attackers and also upsetting the central transition areas for their opponents to limit the counter-attacks.

Generally thought to be unlucky, the thirteenth season turned out to be just the opposite for Men's Soccer as CMU lifted their first MCAC Conference Championship Trophy since 2005 on a 1-0 win over Brandon University on Sunday afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
Undefeated through the regular season, with 9 wins and 1 draw, the Bobcats would certainly test the fortitude of the CMU squad and the tactics of first-year head coach Anderson Pereira. This would be the third meeting between the two teams, after the Bobcats won both previous encounters 3-2 in Brandon and 4-1 earlier this month at Ralph Cantafio.
