Week 12 of the MCAC schedule had all four active varsity teams on the road for weekend series; Blazers volleyball visited the Assiniboine Cougars in Brandon for a two-game set, while the basketball squads headed to Southern Manitoba for two dates with the Providence Pilots.
Friday night was a big night for Blazers Athletics as the women's volleyball team played their first match of the season at the site of the 2022 MCAC Volleyball Championships. Their matchup was with a struggling Cougars squad, who had yet to win a set through six games played going into the match. The Blazers had no plans to be the first team to drop a set to ACC and rolled to a straight-sets victory 25-14, 25-18, 25-17, looking like a team bent on holding their second place spot in the Manitoba conference rankings. Head Coach Jayme Menzies utilized a number of her players in the win, but got the biggest contributions from rookie left sides Rachel Bartel and Halle Meisner, as well as rookie middle Annika Kornelsen, who displayed her athleticism on a number of offensive sequences, running steps and then finishing the rally with a block.

Tough out-of-province competition in early season exhibitions has paid early dividends for the Blazers basketball squads, as they remain perfect in MCAC action through their first three weekends of play.
Now back in Manitoba for the remainder of the season, the Blazers basketball teams tipped off with their second home matches of the season in a home-and-home weekend with the St Boniface Rouges. Coming off a huge blowout win in their previous meeting, Blazers women's basketball gave the home crowd another show, throwing up 106 points on Friday night, and earning them their third win in conference play of the young season. Scoring came from across the lineup, with second-year Reyna Reyes leading the pack with 17 points, including nine from beyond the arc, along with rookies Oluwanifemi Gbadamosi, Annika Goodbrandson, Emily Townsend, and Maizy Lawson who all hit double-digits points in the game.

This past week marked the fall reading break for CMU students, but the Blazers basketball and volleyball teams were still in session and enjoyed some good times during their time off from classes.
The lone MCAC action for the Blazers on the week was a Saturday matinee matchup with the Assiniboine Cougars on the volleyball court at the Loewen Athletic Centre. Prior to the match, your Blazers women's volleyball squad was sitting in third place in the MCAC standings with a 1-2 record, just above the 0-3 Cougars. A rookie-heavy lineup took the court for CMU, with rookie setter Paige Wright controlling the offence for the entirety of the match. Two tight set wins for the Blazers had the tensions pretty high in the Loewen before things fell apart for the winless Cougars and CMU cruised to a 3-0 victory, improving their record to 2-2 on the season. Standouts for the Blazers were the left side tandem of rookies Halle Meisner and Rachel Bartel who notched 11 and 8 kills respectively for the team in the quick victory. Add to that five aces each from the service line, and 18 digs in the backcourt for Bartel and you have the recipe for an all-around win. A win by St Boniface over the Providence Pilots in the other MCAC matchup on the weekend puts the Blazers in a tie for second place on points with the Pilots, with the advantage on sets won/lost going the Blazers way at this early point in the year.
