Blazers MBB Make their First Offseason Move Signing Point Guard Tugade
Tuesday, May 14, 2024 @ 11:00 AM |
The CMU Men's Basketball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Caden Tugade for the 2024-25 MCAC and NIAC seasons. The Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute and Crossover Basketball product will look to be an impact playmaker on the point for the Blazers this upcoming year.
Following in the footsteps of recently graduated shooting guard Binh Nguyen, as well as standout rookie from last season Lance Catipon, Tugade is making the jump from Daniel McIntyre to the Blazers for his first year of college eligibility. Playing in the Winnipeg Tier 1 zone of the MHSAA "AAAA" division, Tugade's Maroons had a number of tournament finals appearances en route to a Provincial Championships berth. A finals appearance in their first tournament of the year in Brandon was followed by another second-place finish in their own DMCI tournament, and then the team brought it all together to win the Centurion Shootout at Fort Richmond Collegiate in late January. The Maroons also medalled at St Paul's High School at the Nick Laping Memorial, where Tugade was recognized as a player of the game and defensive player of the game in the same tournament. A captain on the squad since his grade ten season, Tugade helped DMCI past the Miles Mac Buckeyes in this year's high school provincial championships, but saw their run end in the elite eight stage. He was named a zone All-Star for Winnipeg Tier 1, as well as a "AAAA" Graduating All-Star following the team's championship run in March. A multi-sport athlete, Tugade also competes for his high school in Badminton, ultimate, and volleyball, as well as in Football Manitoba's flag football league.

Your Blazers Men's Basketball Team are the 2023-24 MCAC Champions after a dominant performance over the Providence Pilots on Saturday night in St. Boniface. The Championship title is the first for the team since the 2016-17 season, and first under head coach Scott Martin who was voted the 2023-24 MCAC and NIAC Coach of the Year.
It was a familiar matchup in the final, as the past three MCAC championship games since the pandemic-cancelled season have featured the Blazers and the Pilots; however, the result was very different. The 2021-22 final featured the top-ranked Blazers upset by the Pilots on their home court in Niverville, while last year's championships saw a second half Blazers lead slip away in the dying minutes to the top-seeded Pilots, stunning the CMU home crowd. This year's edition was on neutral turf, and with both teams having nearly equal records it was anyone's guess who might come out on top.

Congratulations to Daniel Cameron of Blazers Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for January. The sophomore forward has been the most consistent performer on a team looking for both MCAC and NIAC success this season.
With the final standings in MCAC to be determined after this weekend's games, and NIAC standings next weekend when the Blazers finish their conference schedule in Bemidji, Minnesota, head coach Scott Martin is hoping for more dominance from his second-year forward. "Daniel is relentless and plays at a high level every game," notes the head coach, who is in his fifth year leading the program. His teams have shown flashes of brilliance before, but this year the squad looks poised for a deep playoff run, thanks in part to the passion and persistence Cameron brings to the floor.
