Victor Hugo: September's Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month
Congratulations to Victor Hugo of Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month for September. Though the Brazilian hasn't been the man scoring the goals for the Blazers, the third year midfielder has been the creative energy behind many of his team's scoring chances, playing a key part in five of CMU's seventeen goals scored this month.
"Victor Hugo has the ability to create something from nothing," said head coach Anderson Pereira, who is midway through his second campaign leading the program. "His skills on the ball are outstanding. His tenacity and dribbling skills are key for the midfield success in gaining control of the game."
An area in Victor Hugo's game that Pereira has seen develop this season is his attention to defending. "You can clearly see from watching a game that Victor Hugo puts his heart into every minute he plays. He plays with passion and is restless in the midfield, helping in the attack and defending," added Pereira. "His improvement on the defensive aspect of his game this season is noticeable, standing out on a group of very talented players."
When called upon to take a larger role in leadership on the field in Alberta earlier this month, due to the playing absence of team captain Ryan Jensen and injured fifth-year defender Aidan Beckingham, Victor Hugo stepped up. The playmaker set up the equalizing goal for CMU versus Medicine Hat from a corner-kick, eventually kicked past the Rattlers' goalkeeper by Jonathan Monsevula. The next day, Victor Hugo would again play the set-up role, playing a pass that allowed Monsevula to score again, this time the first goal of the match against the Lethbridge Kodiaks.
Victor Hugo and his teammates are back in action this weekend, beginning the month of October away to Providence on Saturday afternoon and then at home to the ACC Cougars on Sunday at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. The Blazers find themselves currently in a tie for third-place in the MCAC standings, deadlocked on 9 points with the USB Rouges and both trailing Providence and the Brandon Bobcats by a single point.
