Congratulations to Victor Hugo Gomes de Abreu of Blazers Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for September. The veteran attacking midfielder continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the centre of the pitch with his technical skill and vision.

After a slow start to the season, Abreu has tallied goals the past four games in which he's featured, and currently sits third in the MCAC in both goals and points. A master of the set piece, the team's captain has scored multiple times off stoppages in play, and factors heavily in controlling the middle of the pitch with an ability to create his own shot that makes him a dangerous offensive weapon as well as a playmaking threat.

Abreu's presence was missed on the field last season, and the return of the Brazilian star certainly has co-head coaches Anderson Pereira and Gode Katembo in high hopes that he will continue to be a difference-maker for the remainder of the outdoor season and into the futsal schedule. "Victor is not just an exceptional player; he is the playmaker and a true leader within our team," states Pereira. "His ability to read the game, create scoring opportunities, and inspire his teammates sets him apart." His contributions during the team's early home-and-home series with the Assiniboine Cougars really got the team heading in the right direction, and since then the team knocked off last year's MCAC champions the St Boniface Rouges as well as secured a comeback draw this past weekend over the Brandon Bobcats to sit comfortably in third in the standings with a number of tough tests ahead.

The Blazers are now in a stretch of four games in eight days, and begin a set of three consecutive home matches this Wednesday evening as they hope to capture some critical points towards playoff positioning at the MCAC Championships, which CMU hosts at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex October 28-29. The team that takes home the MCAC title will also earn a spot at this year's CCAA National Championships, hosted by St Clair College of Windsor, Ontario.
