Tristen Holfeld: September's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month
Congratulations to Tristen Holfeld of Blazers Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for September. The rookie central midfielder has had a hot start to the season patrolling the middle of the pitch and producing goal-scoring chances.
Holfeld has begun his MCAC career at a Blazing pace, now sitting near the top of the conference in a number of offensive statistical categories, including fourth in the league in goals with four, fifth in points with eight, and tops the conference in shots, proving that the offseason signing is both proficient on set pieces, and factors heavily in controlling the middle of the pitch with an ability to create his own shot that makes him a dangerous offensive weapon as well as a playmaking threat. He has factored in some big results for the Blazers, having scored the ninetieth-minute equalizer in their first league game against Providence to secure the draw, the game-winner in their 2-1 defeat of the Assiniboine Cougars in their first meeting of the season, and leveled the score this past weekend with Assiniboine, getting the ball rolling on the Blazers' comeback win.
The Blazers first commitment (of any sport) this past spring has certainly lived up to the billing as a notable presence in the middle of the pitch, and had the tough task of filling in the shoes of outgoing All-Canadian Victor Hugo Gomes de Abreu, but the Blazers' coaching staff of Anderson Pereira and Gode Katembo have high hopes that this is just the beginning for Holfeld. "Tristen has been an incredible asset to our team this season, his commitment with the team is outstanding," notes Pereira. "He is always present and ready to work, his determination and heart together with his understanding of the game set him apart. As our top scorer, he combines intelligence on the field with relentless effort, always pushing himself and inspiring those around him. We're proud to have him leading the charge!"
Now entering the final stage of the regular season with one game against each opponent remaining after this coming weekend's away date with the Bobcats, the Blazers hope to capture some critical points towards playoff positioning at the MCAC Championships, which the MCAC is hosting indoors at the South Soccer Complex at the U of M, as well as the North Complex on Leila the final week of October. The team that takes home the MCAC title will also earn a spot at this year's CCAA National Championships, hosted by St Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
