Men's Soccer 2017 MCAC Final Four Preview

It's another weekend of possibilities for Men's Soccer as they prepare to embark on the 2017 MCAC Men's Soccer Championship Semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers snuck into the the MCAC Final Four at the last possible moment, defeating the fifth place Red River Rebels 6-1 in their final regular season match to finish five points clear of the team that ended CMU's Championship hopes in 2016.

It took until the seventh match of the 2017 MCAC Women's Soccer Regular Season for any opponent to score a goal against CMU, and yet a place in the Championship Final Fours was not certain until the final game of the season; a 0-0 draw on Sunday versus Red River Rebels.
In fact, the top five places in the MCAC Women's Soccer standings at the conclusion of the regular season were seperated by a mere 4 points; the top two teams (Providence and USB) tied on points and separated only by head-to-head record, and the third and fourth place team tied on points with the fourth place team (Brandon) recording more wins than the third place team (CMU) but missing out on third place by head-to-head record as well.

As Men's Soccer prepares to compete in the 2017 MCAC Final Four Soccer Championships this weekend the Blazers are pleased to announce the commitment of São Paulo's Victor Hugo Gomes de Abreu, beginning with the 2018 MCAC Futsal season and continuing onto the soccer pitch in the 2018 MCAC soccer season next September.

How competitive is the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference, you may ask? Men's Volleyball showed that they can rally with Ontario's top college programs this weekend in the 2017 Seneca Sting Challenge, an annual preseason tournament attended by the OCAA's best teams.
CMU was entered into Pool A with the likes of the 2017 OCAA Gold Medalists and Bronze Medalists (Mohawk Mountaineers and Fanshawe Falcons, respectively) as well as the Sheridan Bruins and Canadore Panthers and challenged the tournament hosts, Seneca Sting, in exhibition action last Thursday.

For the second consecutive Saturday, Men's Soccer were able to recover a draw just before the referee's final whistle. It began on September 30th in Brandon, when a second half goal had the Bobcats expecting a home field win only to see Ryan Jensen spoil the party in the 92nd minute to draw CMU level in a 1-1 tie.
With only 1 win to go with 3 ties and 1 defeat, the Blazers sat on just 6 points after 5 matches entering Saturday's meeting with the first-place USB Rouges. The defending MCAC Champions, winners of all five matches in their 2017 schedule to date, found CMU difficult to break down until Derek Tessier converted for Les Rouges midway through the first half to open the scoring.
