Talented Trio Sign Letters Of Intent With Women's Volleyball For 2018-19

As Women's Volleyball approaches the final weekend of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Regular Season, the Blazers are thrilled to announce the commitments of Annika Loeppky (left), Alana Porritt (middle) and Bryce Paterson (right) for 2018-19.
A 5'10 setter from the powerful Lord Selkirk Royals program, Annika Loeppky led her team to KPAC Championship victories in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and entered the MHSAA AAAA Girls Provincials as the #2 ranked team last November. During her time with the Royals, Loeppky received MVP honours at the LSRCSS home tournament, was voted team MVP, Female Athlete of the Year and then finished it off with a MHSAAA Graduating All-star recognition in her final season.

Though the CMU Blazers entered the 2018 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship as the higher-seeded team, not many would have picked them to defeat the veteran-laden and Championship-tested Red River Rebels in a one game final, but that's exactly what happened on Saturday night. Balanced scoring combined with tenacious defending and determined rebounding helped CMU to a 40-point second half and a come from behind win, 70-55, earning them their first MCAC Women's Basketball Championship since 2010.

Led by MCAC Scoring Leader, Chris Demauleon-Bartolay's 23 point performance, the Red River Rebels reclaimed the Willy Olaes Memorial Trophy on Saturday afternoon, 88-75 over the 2017 Conference Champion CMU Blazers.
In an unprecidented season that saw the three team conference deadlocked with identical records of 4 wins and 4 losses at the end of the regular season, there was little that separated the two finalists through the first 10 minutes at Providence University College, hosts of the 2018 MCAC Championship Final. Like two heavyweights, the Rebels and Blazers exchanged offensive blows, both knocking down field goal after field goal in a quarter that ended 25-21 in favour of CMU.

Few rivalries top the one that exists between the Red River Rebels and CMU Blazers in college basketball. This weekend the two programs meet again with the 2018 MCAC Women's Basketball Championship banner hanging in the balance on Saturday afternoon in Otterburne, Manitoba, where Providence University College hosts the pinnacle contest of the 2017-18 season.

Participating in two sports in the MCAC is a difficult challenge, but Niverville Collegiate's Parker Davis is preparing to take it on, after signing a letter of intent to play varsity soccer and basketball at CMU next season.
"He's a really strong athlete," said Men's Soccer Head Coach Russell Willms, "he combines a high work-rate, speed, coordination and strong attacking and defensive awareness. He's a good player now but I think we'll see really fast development into a great player for our program."
