Women's Soccer Squeaks Out a Hard-Fought Point in Opener

Two goal-line clearances by fourth year defender Anna Lysack (pictured) helped the Blazers hold on to a point on Sunday night as CMU and the USB Rouges battled to a 1-1 draw at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Week 1 action of MCAC Women's Soccer.
A fixture that is fast-becoming worthy of circling on your calendar, CMU versus USB brought the MCAC dramatic strorylines in 2017. A six-match shutout streak snapped, ending in the Blazers first loss of the season followed by a home field semifinal defeat highlighted by a heartbreaking second half come back by Les Rouges.

It must feel like Christmas Eve for CMU Soccer Fans as a new MCAC season is just one sleep away and a big gift awaits on Matchday 1. When you reflect on the greatest Men's Soccer matches at CMU over the past decade, the marjority of your memories will trace back to the MCAC classics between the Blazers and USB. Those who scored goals against USB have become CMU legends and wins over the MCAC's most decorated Men's Soccer program, though rare, can be retold like a minute by minute match report by any player who was blessed enough to take part.

As Open Tryouts are in full-swing around the MCAC, CMU Athletics is pleased to announce the additions of Men's Soccer and Futsal players Paul Odedina and Matheus Moreno to the program.
Odedina is a graduate of Fort Richmond Collegiate in Winnipeg, joining former high school teammates Will Anderson and Yeri Concepcion as rookies with the Blazers this season. Odedina helped the Centurions to a Manitoba High School Division 1 Indoor Soccer Championship in 2016 and played recreational youth club soccer with Whyte Ridge Community Club from the u16 to u18 level.

It's not every day that an incoming CMU Blazers recruit ends up signing on to compete in two different sports, but for 2017 Shaftesbury High School graduate Kieran Baydock, playing university soccer and basketball will be nothing new to him. After being selected Shaftesbury's Male Athlete of the Year in his final year of high school, Baydock left Manitoba for UBC Okanagan where he red-shirted for the Heat's USports Men's Soccer and Men's Basketball teams in the 2017-18.

He is no stranger to the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. On Monday CMU Athletics announced Anderson Pereira as the new head coach of the Men's Soccer program, succeeding Athletics Director Russell Willms who recently stepped down from his coaching position.
While a student athlete, Pereira laced up his boots for the Red River Rebels, captaining the program in each of his three years as a player and leading his team to their first-ever Championship in Men's Futsal in 2017 where he was named Most Valuable Player. Pereira moved into the coaching ranks in September 2017 as an assistant coach with the Rebels program and as the native of Santa Vitoria do Palmar, Brazil became more rooted in the Winnipeg soccer community, he found many club coaches reaching out to him for his ability to positively influence their youth players in technical and tactical elements of the game.
