Defense Shines As Women's Soccer Posts Solid Weekend Results

It wasn't a perfect weekend for the defending MCAC Champions, but CMU represented their province well with two strong showings in Southern Alberta on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
After conceeding three goals in the opening 45 minutes of their first match of 2019, the Blazers have held their opponents to just two goals over their last 225 minutes, allowing only a single goal in each of their weekend CCAA friendlies against the ACAC's Medicine Hat Rattlers and Lethbridge Kodiaks.

CMU scored back to back 1-1 results this weekend to remain undefeated in four against Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference (ACAC) opponents dating back to last season when the Blazers took a win and a tie from their cross-conference friendlies.
After a 3-1 win over the Ambrose Lions and a 2-2 draw against the SAIT Trojans in 2018, rookie winger Jonathan Monsevula played the hero this weekend scoring CMU's goal in each game; Saturday versus the Medicine Hat Rattlers and Sunday when the Blazers visited the Lethbridge Kodiaks.

It's been three short months since the big announcement, that being, the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference's application approved to join the CCAA. Now the sixth regional conference of the national association, the MCAC must continue to show their level of competitiveness over the next two seasons as probationary members in anticipation of entering full membership in the CCAA in 2021-22.

Providence striker Makayla Myer proved to be the difference between two evenly matched teams on Saturday afternoon, as the Pilots handed CMU a 3-0 defeat at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. The speedy striker broke through the young Blazer's backline in the 4th, 23rd and 36th minute to give the away team a three goal halftime lead, while rookie goalkeeper Kara Kamai stopped all 13 shots she faced to collect her first MCAC shutout.

Matheus Moreno scored his first MCAC soccer goal as a member of the CMU Blazers in the 58th minute but it was only enough to cut the Pilots' lead in half as Providence hung on for a 2-1 away victory on Saturday afternoon in front of approximately 200 spectators at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. The visitors got goals from Jay Thielmann late in the first half and Austin Blackwell early in the second, to grab a commanding two goal cushion, shocking the defending champions.
