Bruised Blazers Begin New Season With Two Wins Over Trinity

The injury bug effecting women's basketball has now officially been carried from the preseason into the regular season but it didn't stop CMU from collecting two wins in their first weekend of NIAC play in Ellendale last weekend, despite their reduced roster.

Fourth year guard Jessica Marx-Houndle led by example on Sunday, scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 rebounds as CMU topped the Trinity Lions 67-48. The Blazers' success was in now way a small feat. CMU entered the weekend action without the services of 2019 leading scorer and NIAC women's basketball Most Valuable Player Julia Schatkowsky and third-year forward Carley Matkowski. Madison Wood also came up big in the win, scoring 14 points while adding 8 rebounds and 4 steals.

Gayleard Honoured With Prestigious Tom Longboat Award

Rookie CMU outside hitter Cam Gayleard was recently announced as the recipient of a major national sports recognition. The Tom Longboat Award is given out annually to a male and female indigenous athlete, at both a regional and national level.

Gayleard, a rookie metis-athlete is in his first season with the Men's Volleyball team after graduating in 2019 from Manitoba's Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School. Honoured to be recognized with a national award, the 6'1 left-side attacker shares the Tom Longboat spotlight with Lyric Atchison, a women's rugby player for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

Offensive explosion sparks Blazers to home win over Mighty Mikinocks

An incredible 48-point second quarter vaulted the CMU Blazers into a 70-45 halftime lead over Turtle Mountain Community College on Saturday afternoon after trailing the Mighty Mikinocks 27-22 after one.

On Friday night it was the visitors who pulled away late in the game to get the preseason win thanks to a fourth period that saw the Mikinocks outscore their opponents by 14 points, pushing past CMU for a 89-83 win.

Fourth quarter push lifts CMU over Turtle Mountain in final preseason game

Anna Pyne scored 20 second half points to power CMU past Turtle Mountain Community College in NIAC preseason women's basketball action on Friday night. The first-year guard topped all offensive performers with a game-high 26 points, shooting 10 of 20 from the field and hitting on 5 of 11 from beyond the 3-point line; a career high for the rookie.

Kieran Baydock: October's Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Kieran Baydock of Men's Soccer and Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month for October. A rare dual-sport athlete with the Blazers, Baydock proved in 2018-19 that he was not a one-trick pony by lacing up his soccer boots in the fall and high tops in the winter. This October, the product of nearby Shaftesbury High School contributed to the success of both programs simultaneously, showing his dominance outdoor and indoor.
