Blazers Add Size To Lineup With River East's Brenton
Wednesday, May 6, 2020 @ 11:24 AM |
After a year away from competitive basketball, former River East Kodiak Matt Brenton recently made his commitment to return to the court for the 2020-21 season with the CMU Blazers.
Standing at a true 6'5, Brenton will fill a key void for the Blazers, who fielded a rather undersized roster in 2019-20. On top of that, the newest signee is a strong rim-protector and rebounder who has the ability to run the floor and finish. "Matt is a long, athletic player who is just starting to bloom," said CMU head coach Scott Martin, who has been working at getting Brenton to the Blazers since last summer. "He has all the tools to be a great player and the potential to be a key contributor for us."

Tai Linklater is a fast learner. That is certainly the case when it comes to her development on the soccer field. The soon-to-be W.C. Miller graduate only started playing the 11 a-side game in Grade 11 and despite the short length of season for rural high school athletes, the defender helped her team to a fourth place finish in the 2019 Provincials and scored recognition as a Provincial All-star.

Though the 6'4 forward was unable to complete the senior year of his high school campaign with top-ranked Sturgeon Heights this season, Fedak helped his Huskies to the 2020 Zone Championship and ended his career with a selection to the 'AAAA' Boys Graduating All-star team at the Basketball Manitoba Awards earlier this month.

The versatile 5'8 left side/middle was recognized as her high school's Most Valuable Player in her Grade 12 season and added the title of Springfield Collegiate's Female Athlete of the Year prior to her graduation last summer.

Joe Di Curzio added one more award to his trophy cabinet last week, when Basketball Manitoba recognized the long-time CMU head coach with the prestigous Open Category Women's/Girl's Basketball Coach of the Year at their annual awards banquet (that this year had to be delivered through social media).
The "Open" category selects the top women's or girl's basketball coach from amongst community club, high school, college and university coaches in the province. Di Curzio led CMU to their third consecutive MCAC Championship in 2020 and followed it by adding CMU's first Championships banner in the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last February, when the Blazers came from behind to top the Providence Pilots in overtime. The Blazers joined the NIAC conference in 2016.
