Markus Martens: January's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month
Thursday, February 5, 2026 @ 11:52 AM |
Congratulations to Markus Martens of Blazers Men's Volleyball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for January. The fifth-year middle has been a dominant force in the MCAC for some time now, and his consistent play helped lead the team to take wins against each of their conference opponents this month.
A true coaches' player, Martens takes his craft seriously, always willing to adjust and improve, and has seen his star rising in the MCAC since he entered the league in 2021. The rural Saskatchewan product is a workhorse by nature, starting in more matches than any other Blazers men's volleyball player since his debut for the 2021/22 season, in which he featured for CMU in the MCAC's first appearance at a CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championships. His rise to dominance in the middle was finally recognized during the 2023/24 season when he was named to the MCAC All-Conference team, and later received the Academic All Canadian award, showcasing his talents in the classroom to go along with his work ethic on the court and in the fitness centre.

Congratulations to Daniel Cameron of Blazers Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for November. The senior forward is back to his usual dominant form, as the Blazers look to defend their MCAC title in 2025/2026.
A perennial all-conference selection both North and South of the border, Cameron is also the reigning MCAC Player of the Year, and hopes to run it back with the team again this year. Things are looking good so far for the team, with a 4-0 start in MCAC play, and 6-0 record to start the NIAC season. With veteran forward Andrew Bruin likely out for the remainder of the season, the Blazers will be leaning on Cameron more than ever to dominate the boards.

Congratulations to Julia Sawatzky of Blazers Women's Volleyball on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for November. The veteran Blazer has taken her game to new heights, and with it the program, as the team made history by featuring in the CCAA National Rankings for the first time ever earlier this month.
Now in her fourth season, Sawatzky continues to develop her game and has become a dominant left side in the conference. At the halfway mark of the season, Sawatzky now sits level with her teammate Halle Meisner at second in the MCAC in kills per set (2.68), and fourth in total kills with 91. Sawatzky started the 2025/26 campaign strong, earning herself MCAC Athlete of the Week honours after the team's first full weekend of play, and two wins over the Assiniboine Cougars when she notched a team-high 25 kills over the two match span. More recently, Sawatzky was named MCAC player of the game on November 28th, when she led all attackers in the match with 11 kills against the defending champions Providence Pilots.
