Mekhi Lisan: February's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month
Congratulations to Mekhi Lisan of Blazers Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for February. The rookie guard has been a consistent performer for the Blazers all season, and saved some of his best work for last as the MCAC Championships MVP.
A player with experience well beyond his years, Lisan was finally able to play in front of friends and family here in Winnipeg after high school stints in America, and a season out of high school that ended before it began. Lisan joined a formidable Blazers backcourt in the off-season that already included dynamic playmakers and shooting threats Braeden Fernandez, Marco Guaring, and Derian Castaneda, and earned his playing time through consistent performances throughout the season.
Lisan suited up for CMU in all eight games in February, that saw the team go 7-1, the lone blemish being in the NIAC Championship Final; a loss which the team avenged in a big way last Friday night by blowing the Pilots out of the building in a 80-36 win in the MCAC Championship Final. Lisan certainly is a threat on many fronts, able to score in the paint, from the perimeter, and as a distributor, and also as a defensive asset for the team. At season's end, Lisan stood second in the MCAC in three-point makes, second in assists, fourth in steals, and fourth in field goals made among all his Manitoba peers. He was only one of two Blazers to average over ten points per game throughout the season, alongside MCAC and NIAC Player of the Year Daniel Cameron. Lisan clearly saved some of his best work for late in the season; he was the high scorer in the team's February 15th dismantling of the FLBC Conquerors, and added 16 points in the team's NIAC Quarter Final win over Sisseton Wahpeton, before helping secure the Manitoba championship win as the high scorer and Championship MVP on Friday.
The Blazers are now back-to-back MCAC Champions and will be looking for more next season as the core of the team is set to return next season to run it back again. The team will take a short break from official training for now, but will resume later in the spring after the annual Green & Gold Athletics Awards are handed out on March 28th, when Lisan will certainly be in the conversation for Blazers Rookie of the Year.
