No Bad Luck for Blazers on Friday the 13th
Sunday, January 15, 2023 @ 9:32 PM |
The first weekend back in MCAC league play may have started off on Friday the Thirteenth, but it was certainly no day for bad luck for the Blazers. Four wins on Friday night, followed by another four on Saturday had the Blazers take eight of a possible ten games on the weekend slate.
In their first home action since early December, the Blazers volleyball squads hosted Les Rouges at the Loewen as the CCAA marquee matchup for Manitoba and the green and gold didn't dissappoint. Coming off a third place finish at the Niagara Knights Invitational in Southern Ontario, the Blazers men came out firing on all cylinders, taking the first set by a 25-15 scoreline, then the second 25-17 before a third and final tight 25-23 game that gave the Blazers the win. CMU managed to spread the offence around throughout the match, but Duncan Petrie led all players with nine kills from the right side, and added a game-high three aces as well.

Although we are only a few days into the second semester of classes, the Blazers were busy over the break, culminating with a big slate of exhibitions this past weekend.
Both women's and men's volleyball squads took to the skies on Thursday and safely reached Toronto where they went their separate ways; the women East along Lake Ontario to Oshawa where they were competing in the Durham College Cup, while the men headed to the Niagara peninsula to meet OCAA competition at the Niagara Knights Invitational.

After a successful opening weekend to the 2022-23 MCAC volleyball season with both teams earning wins over the Assiniboine Community College Cougars, this past weekend saw the conference schedule begin in earnest with a home-and-home series with the Providence Pilots.
Friday's showdown in Niverville was the home opener for the Providence Pilots, and CMU's men's side did everything in their power to ruin the party. The best-on-best matchup started smoothly for the Blazers who cruised to a 25-17 first set victory. A stumble in the the second set saw Providence regain some momentum, but a marathon 29-27 set win for the Blazers in their road whites proved to be the back-breaker for the Pilots, as the visitors got out to an early lead in the fourth set and sailed to the four set victory. Second-year right side Duncan Petrie led all Blazers with 15 kills along with some huge serving runs, while left side Cam Gayleard added 14 of his own in the win. The story of the game was perhaps the passing of the Blazers squad, allowing setter Tim Juvonen to spread the offence and keep the Pilots on their heels. Left side-turned-libero Brock Carmichael was named player of the match for CMU, notching 14 digs and solid serve-receive numbers throughout the match.

Last weekend's soccer matchup with the ACC Cougars may have been billed as a CCAA marquee matchup, but this Sunday's rematch on Assiniboine's home turf proved to be the real climax of the season thus far, and a potential turning point as the men's and women's team make a drive for playoff positioning.
Coming off a stretch of three games in only five days concluding last weekend, the Blazers had a well-deserved light weekend with only the one match scheduled on Sunday; a final meeting of the season with the Cougars that would prove to be the decider of the season series on the men's side. Prior to kickoff the Blazers trailed the Cougars for the final playoff spot by one point on the table, with both previous meetings ending in draws that saw neither side able to break away and earn full points. As in the standings, the Blazers trailed first in the game, with ACC's star Daniel Lopez scoring the first goal of what could only be described as a very hotly contested match, with several heated exchanges occurring throughout and after the final whistle. Sophomore midfielder Micheal Ladell was able to draw the Blazers back even shortly before halftime. With cards flying of all colours, CMU's Matheus Dos Anjos Aquino netted another for the Blazers pulling the green and gold ahead for good, giving them the essential full points on the day which allowed them to leapfrog the Cougars in the MCAC standings with only two games remaining. Each team was awarded at least six cards through ninety minutes, including three reds to ACC, which could greatly affect their ability to pushback for points needed to catch the Blazers.
