Louisa Morton: September's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month
Tuesday, October 3, 2023 @ 10:40 AM |
Congratulations to Louisa Morton of Blazers Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for September. The rookie defender has demonstrated a maturity and consistency to her game not normally seen in first year student-athletes.
Morton's play in the first half of the season thus far has been instrumental in putting the Blazers in the playoff picture, with her ability to shut down the opposition's top talents, and helping transition the counter-attack by setting up her strikers downfield. Originally signed for the 2022/23 season, Morton ended up deferring her start for a year and rejoined the team this summer ready to get back into competitive collegiate soccer. She has started all six of the Blazers' games so far this season, and has used her talent and athleticism to control the middle of the pitch.

The CMU Women's Soccer program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Leila Varias for the 2023-24 MCAC season. The Miles Macdonell product will add more versatility to the Blazers' lineup with experience playing all over the pitch throughout her high school and club career thus far.
Playing with the Buckeyes at her Miles Macdonell Collegiate, Varias has shone both in the MHSAA "AAAA" outdoor and WYSA high school girls premiership indoor seasons throughout her time at the school. Since the COVID-19 cancelled seasons, her Buckeyes have gone on to become KPAC Champions in the outdoor season last spring, where Varias featured primarily as a forward on the wing, occasionally dropping back to the midfield when asked. In the indoor premiership she was tasked with controlling the midfield, but still maintained her scoring touch, where she was still able to find the back of the net in the top high school tier in the province.

Blazers Athletics celebrated the 2022/23 season at their annual Green & Gold Banquet held in the Great Hall at Canadian Mennonite University this past Tuesday, handing out awards for academics, athletic excellence, and good works, while sharing stories of the season's successes on and off the field of play.
This year the Blazers took home one MCAC Championship, that being the women's basketball team's fifth consecutive provincial title, and the team went on to a finals appearance at the NIAC Championships a week later. All eight Blazer teams, including women's and men's futsal made final four appearances at MCAC Championships, with both the men's volleyball and basketball teams making finals as well. The Blazers men's volleyball team peaked at the eighth spot in the CCAA National Volleyball Rankings in mid-February; the highest ranking an MCAC team has achieved in the conference's history thus far over its two years of full participation in the CCAA.

With MCAC and NIAC Championships all completed, the dust has finally settled on the 2022/23 varsity seasons, which gives us reason to take a look at some highlights of the past six months.
Blazers soccer started the season in September as always, and both teams came out of the gate a bit slowly waiting until their first matchups with the Assiniboine Community College Cougars in week two to pick up points on the season.

Thursday, November 3, 2022 @ 7:11 PM |
Congratulations to Kalyssa Wasylik of Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for October. The highly-skilled player made the transition from midfield to defence in her sophomore season.
With a few changes to the lineup in the offseason, Blazers women's soccer co-head coaches Cara Isaak and Lianna Bestvater had some tough roster decisions to make and turned to Wasylik to move to the fullback position at the wing of the back line of defence. The CMU coaches weighed in on their rising star's play this month, stating "Kalyssa has really reached a new level of play this year. She was asked to transition to defense which was new for her and she had an amazing attitude about it and worked really hard to learn the position. She brings great energy to every game and gets the crowd on their feet with her footwork."
