Daniel Cameron: January's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Daniel Cameron of Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for January. The rookie forward has been a handful for the opposition to contain in his first season with the Blazers.

Cameron has undoubtedly been a bright spot for the Blazers who sit squarely in second place in the MCAC standings, and still fighting to earn their spot in the NIAC Championships later in February. The Regina, Saskatchewan native was certainly a big signing in the summer, pegged to be an instant impact player, but few would have guessed he would become so productive so quickly. In a year of huge lineup changes for the Blazers men's basketball squad, Cameron has filled a big void in the starting lineup that led the MCAC Conference standings all of last season.

Like his fellow athlete of the month, Nifemi Gbadamosi, Cameron has been a statistical force on the boards, earning double-doubles in points and rebounds in three of the four games this month with stats available. Sitting first in the conference in all rebounding categories, Cameron has averaged a double-double in January, as well as through the entire season thus far, and has more than triple the number of rebounds of his next-highest producing teammate, even having missed two games in Bemidji this month. He also tops the MCAC leaderboards in points, blocks, and field goals, and sits in third in both points per game and field goals per game.

Cameron's play caught the eye of the conference in the team's first league action after the break, when he put in a record breaking 26-point and 27-rebound performance in the team's win over the St Boniface Rouges on January 13, and followed that with a 15-point, 11-rebound game in the second of the back-to-back to earn himself MCAC Male Athlete of the Week. Blazers head coach Scott Martin couldn't be more happy with his rookie forward so far, noting "Daniel has been a great addition to the team, no question about it. He's hard working, humble, and already a proud Blazer and it shows in his production. He averages a double-double in points and rebounds, and his play heading into playoffs will have a huge impact on our results.

Cameron and his teammates head out to Plymouth, Minnesota this afternoon for their final set of NIAC competitions against the Free Lutheran Bible College Conquerors, the results of which will be a huge determining factor on whether the team qualifies for the NIAC Championships later in February. The team will also host the MCAC Championships next weekend, where a semi-final matchup with the St Boniface Rouges on Friday, February 10 looks to be the route to the finals on February 12 against the top-seeded Providence Pilots.
