Oluwanifemi Gbadamosi: February's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month
Congratulations to Oluwanifemi Gbadamosi of Blazers Women's Basketball on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for February. The recently named 2024/25 MCAC and NIAC All-Conference selection finished her four year career strong this month with some record-breaking performances, and two championship wins.
A raw force to be reckoned with when she first joined the Blazers, Gbadamosi soon established herself as a premier talent on the boards, and continued her dominance in the paint right up to the final moments of the Blazers' massive comeback win in the MCAC Championships last Thursday.
February couldn't have started any better for Gbadamosi, recording a CMU Women's Basketball program record 21 rebounds in the team's 75-72 win over the Providence Pilots, and achieving a double-double in the process. 'Nif' as she is known to her teammates followed it up with another 20-rebound performance the following night, breaking the previous record of 19 (which she co-held with former Blazer Jessica Marx-Houndle) twice in the same weekend! She was deservedly named the MCAC Female Athlete of the Week after those performances, which seemed to buoy the Blazers to a perfect 7-0 record in February, including three wins over the FLBC Conquerors, the closest being a tense OT win over the hosts in the NIAC Semi Final, as well as four victories over their provincial rivals the Pilots. Her biggest performance of the playoff run came in the NIAC Championship Semis, where she put up 20 points and 17 rebounds over the Conquerors, and followed it up the following day with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the team's comfortable win over the Pilots to secure the program's second-ever NIAC Championship Title.
Perhaps the tight playoff run south of the border steeled the Blazers for a tight game in the MCAC Finals, as CMU found themselves trailing Providence with a little over two minutes remaining in the Manitoba championship. Gbadamosi was key in the turnaround that saw the Blazers erase a nine-point deficit, to go on to win 77-71, as she picked off a Providence pass at a pivotal point in the dying seconds, which went back the other way for a huge CMU score to seal the win.
In her final season with the Blazers, Gbadamosi still shouldered a big load, finishing the year ranked first in rebounds, second in minutes played, and fourth in points and field goal percentage across the entire conference. As she finishes up her studies this semester, Gbadamosi has certainly left her mark on the program and the Blazers are forever greatful for her contributions to Blazers Athletics!
