Blazers Women's Basketball Make Landmark Signing with Victoria Welsh

Blazers Women's Basketball Make Landmark Signing with Victoria Welsh

The CMU Women's Basketball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Victoria Welsh for the 2023-24 MCAC and NIAC seasons. The Landmark Collegiate product will be a versatile combo forward/guard addition to the Blazers roster for the coming year.

Welsh will bring another dimension to the Blazers next season having competed within the "AA" boys division of the Manitoba High School Athletic Association for both of her varsity seasons. Coming from a relatively small school often comes with the need to fill in where necessary, and after the varsity boys coach for her high shcool Landmark 96ers approached her to tryout for his team in her grade 11 year, Welsh proved herself on the court and was given a spot on the squad, receiving full support from her new teammates. The change was received a little less amicably by opposing teams, but despite some backlash Welsh continued on, defying the typical gender boundaries. Now in her senior year she has garnered a reputation as a worthy opponent and has used her experiences as motivation to continue to improve and bring her game to the next level. Her high school coach, Matt Feakes, weighed in on what the Blazers latest signing brings to the court, noting "Victoria has a great drive to play basketball the right way. She understands the game, shares the ball, and has good skills. She never shrinks back from the big moments."

From the Beaches of BC to the Manitoba Hardwood: Murphy Makes the Jump to Blazers MVB

The CMU Men's Volleyball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Alex Murphy for the 2023-24 MCAC season. The R.A. McMath and Langara College transfer from Richmond, BC is excited to take his game from the beach back to the hardcourt next season.

A graduate from Richmond's R.A. McMath Secondary School in 2018, Murphy has been honing his all-around game on the beach courts of BC's lower mainland in his time since graduating.  Murphy was a mulit-sport athlete for his high school Wildcats, featuring on the volleyball, basketball, and rugby teams, which led to him being named the school's Top Male Athlete in his senior year.  A setter on his high school squad, Murphy was a late bloomer seeing his growth spurt come not until his varsity years when he became one of the taller boys on the team.  At that time he was already active during the summers in outdoor grass leagues, and carried that passion for the outdoor game into his time since graduating high school.

Rural Standout Reaching for New Heights with Blazers WVB

The CMU Women's Volleyball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Kiera Haney for the 2023-24 MCAC season. The Major Pratt School and North American Indigenous Games Team Manitoba product has seen her game soar to new heights in recent months.

Hailing from Binscarth, Manitoba, a small community south of Russell where Haney played her high school and club volleyball, the 5'7" outside hitter has made a career of leading her underdog squads into big game situations.  Haney competed for the Major Pratt Trojans throughout her junior varsity and varsity high school seasons, when the MHSAA "AA" school routinely punched above their weight class in competitions across the province.  Since a bronze medal finish at "AA" Provincials in her first season of junior varsity, her Trojans have gone on to win back-to-back provincial titles following her COVID-cancelled grade ten season.  Haney's varsity squads entered those provincial championships with a formidable record of finishes at tournaments across Manitoba, proving that those big championship wins were not a fluke.  In her grade 11 year, Haney's Trojans attended ten tournaments and took home the title in an incredible eight of them, with the remaining two playing to second place finishes.  Her play earned her a player of the game award in the provincial championships, and she was recognized as the most improved player on the team at the season's end.  This past season Haney co-captained her Major Pratt team to another incredible feat of nine tourament wins including the aforementioned second consecutive provincial championship title, and also proved that the team could hang in with the best at the "AAA" and "AAAA" level, finishing top four in Niverville's "AAA" tournament, and top four in the Spartan Dig tournament in Brandon, which brings together "AAA" and "AAAA" teams in Manitoba.  The Trojans also played to a second place finish in Regina, at a tournament with 32 teams competing.  Haney was once again recognized as a player of the game at MHSAA Provincials, and earned herself a graduating all-star nod.

Blazers Men's Soccer Bolster Backline with Byfield

The CMU Men's Soccer program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Daunte Byfield for the 2023-24 MCAC season. The Linden Christian product will bring athleticism and a passion for the game to the Blazers' backline beginning this fall.

One look at the 5'11" Byfield's powerful frame and it becomes immediately apparent why the budding sport star has seen so much success in a wide range of sports over the last few years.  Never one to stick to a single athletic dicipline, Byfield has cultivated an all-around athlete persona that suggests a rare competitive drive and game sense allowing him to make an impact on many levels.  Coming out of the MHSAA "AAA" Linden Christian School has allowed Byfield to broaden his athletic endeavours, featuring prominently on a number of their varsity teams.  He has anchored the back line of the Wings' varsity soccer team since 2021, helping the team to a Zone 12 Championship in 2021, as well as a "AAAA" Provincials consolation finals appearance last high school season.  He is looking to lead the team as a co-captain in the upcoming spring season, which begins in a few weeks' time.
