Julia Sawatzky: November's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month

Julia Sawatzky: November's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Julia Sawatzky of Blazers Women's Volleyball on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for November. The second year outside hitter has stepped up in a big way to start the season for the Blazers.

Sawatzky showed flashes of brilliance last year for CMU in her rookie season, when she featured primarily on the right side, but the Dakota Collegiate product has worked hard to round out her game and has been used as part of a left side attacking tandem for the green and gold this season, giving her more opportunity to shine.  At the end of league play for the first half of the season, Sawatzky is the first and only MCAC attacker thus far to tally 100 kills, and currently leads the league leaderboard in that category.  Not only does she rank highly in total kills, but her efficiency stats also land her top three in the conference, meaning she is among the league's best in converting attacking opportunities to kills.  It's not surprising then that Sawatzky has had a number of monster offensive games this semester, but has also shown incredible consistency, leading the Blazers in kills in eight of the team's nine games this half.

Osama Ali: October's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Osama Ali of Blazers Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for October.  The rookie striker gave opposition defenders fits all season with his speed and relentless pursuit of the ball.

Known to his coaches and teammates as 'Ronaldo,' the speedy striker's commitment to bettering his game on and off the pitch makes the comparison more than a nominal nod to the shared number seven on the jersey.  Ali finished the season in a tie for the team lead in goals with four, and added the Blazers' lone tally in their MCAC Championships semi-final match.  It was a strong finish to the season overall for the green and gold, with the team taking points in four of their six games down the stretch of the regular season, including two wins and a draw against the eventual MCAC Champions Brandon Bobcats.

Caleigh Peden: October's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Caleigh Peden of Blazers Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for October. The veteran defender and team captain held down the Blazers' backline all season.

A transfer to the Blazers last season, the Maple Ridge, BC product made an immediate impact on her new squad, leading to her to being named team captain ahead of the outdoor season, which has just recently finished.  Peden took the role proudly and has led by example all season, growing her game alonside her teammates and was an instrumental part of the Blazers' third place finish in the MCAC standings.

Victor Abreu takes aim during the Blazers' home match against the Assiniboine Cougars earlier in September

Victor Hugo Gomes de Abreu: September's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Victor Hugo Gomes de Abreu of Blazers Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for September. The veteran attacking midfielder continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the centre of the pitch with his technical skill and vision.

After a slow start to the season, Abreu has tallied goals the past four games in which he's featured, and currently sits third in the MCAC in both goals and points. A master of the set piece, the team's captain has scored multiple times off stoppages in play, and factors heavily in controlling the middle of the pitch with an ability to create his own shot that makes him a dangerous offensive weapon as well as a playmaking threat.

Louisa Morton leads the counter-attack in the Blazers' win over the Assiniboine Cougars earlier this September.

Louisa Morton: September's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Louisa Morton of Blazers Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for September. The rookie defender has demonstrated a maturity and consistency to her game not normally seen in first year student-athletes.

Morton's play in the first half of the season thus far has been instrumental in putting the Blazers in the playoff picture, with her ability to shut down the opposition's top talents, and helping transition the counter-attack by setting up her strikers downfield. Originally signed for the 2022/23 season, Morton ended up deferring her start for a year and rejoined the team this summer ready to get back into competitive collegiate soccer. She has started all six of the Blazers' games so far this season, and has used her talent and athleticism to control the middle of the pitch.
