Soccer

Both women's and men's soccer squads hit the road for a pre-season tournament in Red Deer to begin their competitive matches for the fall schedule. The Blazers met some pretty stiff ACAC competition as well as some familiar MCAC foes in the likes of St Boniface and Brandon, who also made the trip West, setting up a preview for the season here in Manitoba.

Louisa Ibarra: October's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Louisa Ibarra of Blazers Women's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for October. The versatile midfielder and defender continued her relentless play for the Blazers this month, often featuring in the attack for the team as well.

After bursting onto the MCAC scene for the 2023-24 season, Ibarra was back at it this year with the Blazers, continuing her upward trend of dominant play. Often tasked with defending the opposition's top threats, Ibarra featured both as an outside midfielder, where she could collect and distribute to the team's strikers, or as a fullback, where she would shut down a competitor's advance. Though stats don't always do a player of her position justice, Ibarra also featured heavily in the Blazers attack as one of the leaders in shots on goal for the team, which hints at the quality of ball she can produce and the ability to create offensive threats. Her in-game impact was noted during the team's MCAC playoff appearance, as Ibarra was named player of the match for the Blazers in their semi-final matchup with rivals Providence Pilots.

Romaine Francis: October's Zueike Male Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Romaine Francis of Blazers Men's Soccer on being selected the CMU Zueike Male Athlete of the Month for October. The veteran attacker finished the season strong, scoring in the final two regular season matches, helping CMU secure a spot in the MCAC playoffs.

As the weather started to cool in October, the Blazers' Jamaican-born offensive star started heating up on the pitch, notching two goals in the late stages of the season, including the all-important game-winning goal over the Assiniboine Cougars on October 19th, securing CMU's spot in the MCAC semi-finals. His ability to make strong plays with the ball at his feet and at high speed often made him the most threatening attacker on the field, drawing defenders and opening up space for teammates to join in on the offence, making him a dual threat in the attack of both a scorer and distributor. His game-winning goal over the Cougars also helped earn Francis MCAC Athlete of the Week honours, as well as the CCAA Athlete of the Week spotlight for Manitoba. His offensive talents on the pitch didn't go unnoticed by the rest of the league as well, as Francis was named an MCAC All-Conference selection heading into the MCAC playoffs.
