Rural Standout Reaching for New Heights with Blazers WVB

The CMU Women's Volleyball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Kiera Haney for the 2023-24 MCAC season. The Major Pratt School and North American Indigenous Games Team Manitoba product has seen her game soar to new heights in recent months.

Hailing from Binscarth, Manitoba, a small community south of Russell where Haney played her high school and club volleyball, the 5'7" outside hitter has made a career of leading her underdog squads into big game situations.  Haney competed for the Major Pratt Trojans throughout her junior varsity and varsity high school seasons, when the MHSAA "AA" school routinely punched above their weight class in competitions across the province.  Since a bronze medal finish at "AA" Provincials in her first season of junior varsity, her Trojans have gone on to win back-to-back provincial titles following her COVID-cancelled grade ten season.  Haney's varsity squads entered those provincial championships with a formidable record of finishes at tournaments across Manitoba, proving that those big championship wins were not a fluke.  In her grade 11 year, Haney's Trojans attended ten tournaments and took home the title in an incredible eight of them, with the remaining two playing to second place finishes.  Her play earned her a player of the game award in the provincial championships, and she was recognized as the most improved player on the team at the season's end.  This past season Haney co-captained her Major Pratt team to another incredible feat of nine tourament wins including the aforementioned second consecutive provincial championship title, and also proved that the team could hang in with the best at the "AAA" and "AAAA" level, finishing top four in Niverville's "AAA" tournament, and top four in the Spartan Dig tournament in Brandon, which brings together "AAA" and "AAAA" teams in Manitoba.  The Trojans also played to a second place finish in Regina, at a tournament with 32 teams competing.  Haney was once again recognized as a player of the game at MHSAA Provincials, and earned herself a graduating all-star nod.

Blazers Men's Soccer Bolster Backline with Byfield

The CMU Men's Soccer program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Daunte Byfield for the 2023-24 MCAC season. The Linden Christian product will bring athleticism and a passion for the game to the Blazers' backline beginning this fall.

One look at the 5'11" Byfield's powerful frame and it becomes immediately apparent why the budding sport star has seen so much success in a wide range of sports over the last few years.  Never one to stick to a single athletic dicipline, Byfield has cultivated an all-around athlete persona that suggests a rare competitive drive and game sense allowing him to make an impact on many levels.  Coming out of the MHSAA "AAA" Linden Christian School has allowed Byfield to broaden his athletic endeavours, featuring prominently on a number of their varsity teams.  He has anchored the back line of the Wings' varsity soccer team since 2021, helping the team to a Zone 12 Championship in 2021, as well as a "AAAA" Provincials consolation finals appearance last high school season.  He is looking to lead the team as a co-captain in the upcoming spring season, which begins in a few weeks' time.

Women's Soccer Land Versatile Talent Varias

The CMU Women's Soccer program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Leila Varias for the 2023-24 MCAC season. The Miles Macdonell product will add more versatility to the Blazers' lineup with experience playing all over the pitch throughout her high school and club career thus far.

Playing with the Buckeyes at her Miles Macdonell Collegiate, Varias has shone both in the MHSAA "AAAA" outdoor and WYSA high school girls premiership indoor seasons throughout her time at the school.  Since the COVID-19 cancelled seasons, her Buckeyes have gone on to become KPAC Champions in the outdoor season last spring, where Varias featured primarily as a forward on the wing, occasionally dropping back to the midfield when asked.  In the indoor premiership she was tasked with controlling the midfield, but still maintained her scoring touch, where she was still able to find the back of the net in the top high school tier in the province.

Blazers WBB Flush with Versatile Talent after Addition of Royal

The CMU Women's Basketball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of Hannah Grobb for the 2023-24 MCAC and NIAC seasons. The Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School captain will be a versatile combo forward/guard addition to the Blazers roster for the coming year.

The Selkirk, Manitoba native will be trading her Selkirk Royal blue for the green and gold of the Blazers this upcoming season after being a standout on her high school squad for the past two varsity seasons.  While the team missed out on the highly competitive MHSAA "AAAA" Provincial Championships, her squad featured at three tournaments this season, including the Crocus Plains Java Jam in Brandon, as well as a third place finish at their home "Royal Rumble Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament," and a semi-finals appearance at the Tec Voc Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament.  Grobb received tournament MVP honours at the latter two, which attests to the impact she had on her team both on the court and from a leadership perspective.  Never one to step down from a challenge, Grobb featured at several different positions throughout her high school career, with the ability to slot in at point or shooting guard with appearances as a small forward as well.
