The CMU Men's Volleyball program is pleased to announce Jack Tyrrell the successor to longtime head coach Don Dulder, as the rising star in the local coaching scene proved his worth assisting Dulder in preparing the Blazers for their 2025 CCAA Nationals run.

Tyrrell has quickly moved up the ranks within the program, first as a player between 2017-2020 when his tenacity and game-sense were first noticed by the athletics staff. His well-rounded game as a player had him slot in throughout the lineup, including most frequently as libero and middle, two positions often considered polar opposites. Tyrrell's teams captured three championship titles during his four years as a student-athlete, including Dulder's first in 2017, then again in 2018 and 2020.

Following the COVID-19 cancelled 2020-21 season and his final year at CMU, Tyrrell joined the Blazers coaching staff for the MCAC's first year in full participation in the CCAA, and leaned on his championship pedigree to help the program to capture the 2022 MCAC title, claiming the first ever berth for a manitoba team at the CCAA Men's Volleyball Championships. During his time as an assistant coach from 2021-2025 Tyrrell has been instrumental in coaching middles and in video analysis, seeing teams he has coached claim a number of records early in the MCAC's time as part of the CCAA, including the highest national ranking in conference history (7th rank nationally) in February of 2024, as well as the first MCAC team to win its opening match at a CCAA Nationals, resulting in tying the highest ever finish at 5th place this past March.

Outside of the CMU sphere, Tyrrell made his first club coaching appearance last summer as a 17U Team Manitoba Provincial Development Coach, and was offered the head coaching job for the 17U Canada Games team this summer, but turned down the position when the CMU head coaching position became available. He has also routinely guest coached at his alma mater high school Linden Christian as well as with the summer sports camps programs associated with both CMU and Linden, showing both his determination to develop the next generation of student-athletes, as well as involvement in the wider Manitoba volleyball community which will help in recruiting for future years.

His undergraduate and post-graduate studies have also fed into his interest in sport, having graduated from CMU in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts and Science with concentrations in biochemistry and social science. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Community Health Science at the University of Manitoba, studying sports-related injury in youth with a heavy concentration in pediatric concussion care, specifically in relationship to volleyball.

"We're pleased to announce Jack as the new head coach of this program." states CMU Director of Athletics Russell Willms. "We are confident that under Jack's leadership we will maintain a very competitive presence in the MCAC and push for even greater success on the national stage." Coordinator of Athletics Programs Joshua Ewert adds "Jack's familiarity with our systems, and the relationships with both our current student-athletes and incoming recruits will help the team momentum heading into the 2025-26 season. I've had the pleasure of coaching Jack as a player, and now alongside as a fellow assistant, and his dedication to the game will be a clear asset to the program."

After a historic run at the 2025 CCAA Men's Volleyball Nationals, Tyrrell and the Blazers are looking to recapture the MCAC title for the first time since 2022 and earn their spot back at the big dance next March, when the 2026 national championships are held in Edmonton Alberta, at NAIT.
