CMU Storms Rebels In First-Ever MCAC Indoor Regular Season Match

Caleb Jutzi enjoyed a successful return to his regular role on right wing, scoring CMU's first and last goals in the Blazers' lopsided 8-0 victory over the Red River Rebels on Saturday afternoon in MCAC men's soccer action played indoor at Winnipeg's Soccer North Facility at Seven Oaks.

For the past four matches, the second-year Blazer has been helping his team by filling a noticeable gap in their starting eleven left vacant when goalkeeper Reed Fitzgerald was forced to the sideline with an injury in Week 3. It took Jutzi only 11 minutes and one touch of the soccer ball to score his second goal of the season, beating Rebel's goalkeeper Yuri Martes and giving CMU a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Monsevula added a second goal moments before the referee blew her halftime whistle, increasing the home team's advantage to 2-0 at the break.

Including the goal Monsevula scored in the 45th minute, it took the Blazers only 19 minutes to smash the game open, scoring six against the Rebels before the game clock could reach 65 minutes. Halftime substitutes Kieran Baydock (2) and Ryan Jensen would combine on three of CMU's early second half markers, while Justin Jutzi and Victor Hugo would score their first regular season goals of 2019, to increase the Blazers' lead to 7-0.

Back in the CMU goal, Fitzgerald made a full recovery. Largely untested by the Rebels over 90 minutes, the rookie backstop showed composure when he was called on, including one great save where he dove to his left to stop Red River's Eric Harder midway through the opening half to keep his team ahead 1-0. CMU outshot the Rebels 18-5 in the match.

The win vaults CMU to a share of top-spot in the MCAC men's soccer standings with the USB Rouges, at least temporarily. Even on points with 15 and mirror records of 5-0-3, the Blazers currently hold the tie-break because of their Week 3 win in head-to-head action against Les Rouges, however both the Brandon Bobcats and Providence Pilots, who sit just below CMU and USB in the standings, have played less matches than the conference-leaders.

Saturday's match between the Bobcats and Assiniboine Community College Cougars was forced to be postponed due to playing conditions. The MCAC is yet to make clear how and when these matches will be made up.
