Anna Pyne: February's Lionheart Sports Female Athlete of the Month
Congratulations to Anna Pyne of Women's Basketball on being selected CMU's Lionheart Sports Female Athlete of the Month for February. The 5'4 guard showed the heart of a lion as she fought back from a serious head injury that forced the rookie off the court since November 15th. Pyne returned to play on February 1st, making an immediate impact with her hustle to help the Blazers rebound against Providence on home court, 24 hours after the Pilots handed CMU their second loss of the NIAC season.
A deadly shooter from distance, Pyne began to recover her shooting touch in Belcourt, North Dakota on February 8th and 9th. Needing to win in both games against the Mikinocks on the final weekend of the regular season, the former College Jean-Sauvé guard would score 11 points in Game 1 after sinking 75% of her shots from beyond the arc, and 15 points on in Game 2 after shooting 40% from distance, to help the Blazers wrap up the top seed in both conferences.
Pyne scored 11 points in CMU's 2020 MCAC Championship win over the Red River Rebels and turned in up in the NIAC tournament, scoring 11 for the Blazers in their semifinal win and 16 in the Championship final, including 1 key 3-pointer in the dying seconds of overtime to cut the Pilots lead to 2 with 23 seconds remaining.
"Anna suffered a very serious injury in November and went through some very tough months of rest and therapy and finally worked her way back onto the court," said head coach Joe Di Curzio. "During our playoff run, Anna was absolutely outstanding, leading our team in 3-pointers - 5 in the NIAC Championship win - plus she really attacked the basket which resulted in great passes to teammates for easy baskets. It was an amazing month for her."
