Kieran Baydock: October's Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Kieran Baydock of Men's Soccer and Men's Basketball on being selected the CMU Lionheart Sports Male Athlete of the Month for October. A rare dual-sport athlete with the Blazers, Baydock proved in 2018-19 that he was not a one-trick pony by lacing up his soccer boots in the fall and high tops in the winter. This October, the product of nearby Shaftesbury High School contributed to the success of both programs simultaneously, showing his dominance outdoor and indoor.

Baydock's month began in Calgary, as CMU Basketball toured through the South Division of the ACAC for preseason action against the St. Mary's Lightning, Ambrose Lions and Olds Broncos. Despite being unable to earn a victory in three attempts, the 2nd year guard managed to garnering praise from his new head coach; "Kieran showed he will be a leader for us and I expect that to be the case all season as he runs our offense," said new Men's Basketball boss, Scott Martin. "He has the responsibility of getting the ball up the court successfully for us, and in high-pressure situations like we faced in Alberta, having Kieran carrying the ball is essential for us."

Baydock averaged 11.7 points per game through the ACAC tour, scoring a team-high 13 points in the October 4th's opener against St. Mary's and finished the weekend with another 13 point performance versus Olds.

With the preseason weekend complete, Baydock returned to the soccer pitch on October 12th, continuing right where he left off in September. The product of Winnipeg's Phoenix Soccer Club scored two second half goals in CMU's big 8-0 win over the Red River Rebels and followed that outing with his fifth goal of the season in a 3-1 win over the USB Rouges in the Blazers final regular season match of 2019.

"This season Kieran has played three different positions for us, starting as a fullback where he is a very solid defender that has the ability to get himself into the attack," explained head coach Anderson Pereira. "Then he has also played as a winger, he has scored goals for us with his powerful shot and his direct dribbling. He also played half a match in the center of midfield and there he also scored a goal and assisted on another. His vision combined with his quality long and short passes makes him a dangerous player and his physical strength and strong defensive skills make him one of the MCAC's most complete players."

Baydock spent his first year of university at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan (UBCO) where he red-shirted in both the Men's Soccer and Men's Basketball USports programs before returning to Winnipeg for the 2018-19 academic year. After transferring to the CMU, Baydock enjoyed an outstanding rookie campaign with the Blazers, earning recognition as CMU's Rookie Male Athlete of the Year.
