Congratulations to Kalyssa Wasylik of Blazers Women's Futsal on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for February. The graduating senior led the Blazers in scoring throughout the indoor season, and helped clinch the team's playoff spot with a hat trick performance on February 7th.
After featuring in a more defensive role for her final outdoor season in the fall, Wasylik was back at the forefront of Blazers scoring come the indoor half of the season, starting the second half at a torrid scoring pace, netting goals in four straight games. With 13 goals on the campaign, the fifth year led CMU in scoring by a wide margin, and was named to the MCAC All-Conference team as the only nominee from her team.
Wasylik had the Assiniboine Cougars' number in particular, notching a four-goal match in Brandon in late January to help ensure the draw and a single point in the standings, and then followed it up with a hat trick on February 7th in a 6-5 win that secured the season series, and essentially booked the Blazers' ticket to the MCAC playoffs. Wasylik came up big again at the MCAC Championships semif finals, scoring in a tight 4-2 loss to the eventual champions Brandon Bobcats. With her scoring touch and ability to turn any scramble play into a goal-getting opportunity, Wasylik had the Cats sweating when she pounced on a turnover and got the Blazers on the board, turning the momentum CMU's way, and helping outscore Brandon 2-1 in the second half. Unfortunately it was too little too late for the Blazers, with the team ultimately coming up just short of the upset, but a huge marker of progress during the season, and a great sign heading into the summer training window.
Blazers head Coach Jason Moist is fully aware of the impact player that Wasylik can be, stating "leading in goals scored is only part of the story for Kalyssa. What truly distinguishes her is her relentless work rate, competitive fire, and ability to rise in big moments. Fierce in pursuit, fearless in front of goal, and unforgettable in celebration, she has defined the standard for excellence this month." With fellow seniors Kasey Petruskavich and Alyssa Doneza, handing in their kits for the final time following the season, the Blazers coach will need to re-tune his squad for next season as he continues to build the program into a championships contender.
With MCAC play now concluded for 2026/27, the Blazers now turn their sights to the slowly warming weather outside, and getting back to outdoor training with a new crop of rookie talent to bolster the lineup for the outdoor season next fall. Stay tuned to Blazers.cmu.ca for updates coming throughout the spring and summer as the team gets set for an MCAC Championships run, with a berth at the 2026 CCAA Women's Soccer Nationals hosted by Conestoga College in Cambridge, Ontario on the line!
