Women's Volleyball Boosted By Elite Middle Hitter For 2018-19

CMU Women's Volleyball is very pleased to announce the commitment of former Gimli Lakers Most Valuable Player Mackenzy Groot for the 2018-19 MCAC season. The 6'0 middle spent the 2017-18 season in the Ontario University Athletic Conference (OUA) competeing in U-Sports with the Nipissing Lakers.

"I am very excited to welcome another U-Sports calibre athlete to our program," said CMU head coach Evelyn Kampen. "Mackenzy is an extremely dynamic and versatile middle. She is fast and explosive and will be a strong force in our offense and blocking next season."

Captain of both her high school volleyball and basketball teams, Groot was selected as her team MVP for both teams in Grade 11.

Choosing volleyball over basketball wasn't an easy decision for Groot. On the hardcourt, the Lakers forward was selected Most Valuable Player at the Manitoba High School 'AA' Championships and was a roster nominee to Team Manitoba after leading Gimli to the 2017 Provincial Girls Basketball Banner.

As a club volleyball player, Groot helped Manitoba Ice 18u's to a first-place finish in the 2017 Division 3 Club Nationals, an 11th place finish in 2016 at the Division 1 Club Nationals with Alliance Volleyball Club and a bronze medal at Manitoba Club Provincials with Winman Volleyball Club in 2016.
