Talented Morris Two-Sport Athlete Chooses CMU For Women's Volleyball

The decision to pursue varsity volleyball at the collegiate level was not the easiest one for Morris Mavericks' Jessica Edel. The 5'10 volleyball and basketball player was selected as the Players Choice Award Winner at both the 2016 MHSAA Volleyball Provincials and the 2017 Basketball Provincials and was sought after to by college and university varsity coaches to compete in both sports.

Edel came to a decision last week, signing her letter of intent with CMU and deciding to make her home on the volleyball court with the Blazers when the 2017-18 season kicks-off in October, much to the delight of her new head coach Evelyn Kampen.

"I am thrilled to be able to add Jess to our program," said Kampen, who is entering her third season in her role as head coach, "she is a dynamic and vesatile athlete, a strong leader and a mature player who has a great passion for the game. She will be an asset to us and will also excel in other ways at CMU as a member of the community here."

Able to excel on the volleyball court as a setter or opposite-side hitter, Edel helped the Mavericks to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Provincials after finishing first in the Zone 4 Championships. Edel captained both her high school volleyball and basketball team during her senior year at Morris School and was recognized as both the MHSAA Rural Athlete of the Week and the Pembina Online Athlete of the Month in 2016.

Edel also competed for Dynamo Volleyball Club where she enter the Manitoba Club Provincials as the second-ranked team and qualified with Dynamo to enter the Canadian National Championships in Division 1 in Edmonton.

For her contribution on the hardcourt, Edel was the recipient of Basketball Manitoba's Ron Meyers Leadership Scholarship and the Manitoba Municipalities Citizenship Award for 2017. She also shines on the track for Morris, competing in triple jump, 200 meters and the 4 x 100 meter relay.

Women's Volleyball will open their 2017 Preseason in Edmonton on September 29th at Concordia University in a four-team tournament with the ACAC's Concordia Thunder, Keyano Huskies and Augustana Vikings. The Blazers will also play an exhibition match with the King's Eagles in Edmonton on September 28th.
