Oluwanifemi Gbadamosi: January's Zueike Female Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Oluwanifemi Gbadamosi of Women's Basketball on being selected the CMU Zueike Female Athlete of the Month for January. The second year forward has been the backbone of the Blazers on the boards all season.

The Blazers women's basketball team has had a busy January schedule with eight competitions throughout the month, including five games counting towards MCAC standings, and five games against NIAC competition, with the games against Providence counting towards both leagues' standings.  With several team members in and out of the lineup since the fall semester, head coach Joe DiCurzio has had to lean on his healthy players to grind out wins, with Gbadamosi being top on that list.  The team went perfect in league play during the month going into their final weekend of NIAC games before championships.

Gbadamosi has had a huge month which the statistics back up: of the six games where reliable stats are available, she earned four double-doubles with rebounds and points, and was one rebound away from a fifth in their first league game of the month, a record-setting 116-26 win over Les Rouges that saw many of the veteran players on the squad play limited minutes during the second half when the game was in hand.  Gbadamosi sits at or near the top of many of the conference's statistical leaderboards, including at the very top of every rebounding category, total points scored, and field goals scored, and second in field goal percentage and total blocks.

The impact forward has certainly put the league on notice with her play, averaging a double-double in her appearances in January, and in fact throughout the season thus far.  Women's basketball head coach Joe DiCurzio has definitely noticed how Gbadamosi's game has grown this season, stating: "Nif is one of our most improved players this year.  She has become a real force in the league, being the top rebounder in both MCAC and NIAC and can be counted on to score the key baskets at key times in the game.  She is a constant double-double player in points and rebounds, and with the departure of so many people from our team last year she has taken on a leadership role and has done a magnificent job of it.  Her attitude of working so hard and constantly working on improving her game has allowed her to develop into one of the top players in both of our leagues."

Gbadamosi and her teammates head out to Plymouth, Minnesota this afternoon for their final set of NIAC competitions against the Free Lutheran Bible College Conquerors before coming home to host the MCAC Championships next weekend, followed by the NIAC Championships back in Plymouth the subsequent weekend.  The team sits in first place in MCAC standings and will earn themselves a bye to the finals on February 12th when they will host the winner of the St Boniface and Providence semi-final.  On the NIAC side the team sits in second place one spot below the Trinity Lions who handed the Blazers their only losses on the season so far.
