Jayme Menzies Introduced As Head Coach Of Women's Volleyball Program
CMU Athletics is very happy to announce the appointment of Jayme Menzies as the new head coach of the CMU women's volleyball team playing in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. The former University of Winnipeg Wesmen has become an influential figure in the Manitoba volleyball community since finishing her five-year playing career and will provide the women's volleyball program with exemplary leadership in her new role.
"We are very proud to officially welcome Jayme to CMU," said Director of Athletics, Russell Willms, "she is a very community-minded individual and a gifted leader who brings a resume of elite coaching experience at the provincial, club and high school level. I am excited to witness Jayme's influence showcased through our program."
While competing with the Wesmen, Menzies was recognized as an Academic All-Canadian and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree before moving to the University of Manitoba's Robson Hall, to complete graduate studies in the Faculty of Law. Her academic path has led Menzies to two significant current roles, as the Manitoba Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Council Director and as the President of Volleyball Manitoba.
As a coach, Menzies has been a key figure at the grassroots of player development and high performance in her home province and has been regularly recognized for her involvement. While coaching the varsity girl's team at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, she was honoured as the 2015 Manitoba High School Girls Coach of the Year and by Sport Manitoba as the Jean England Developmental Coach of the Year. One year later, Menzies received recognition by her home province as the Sport Manitoba Aboriginal Coach of the Year and in 2017 after serving on the coaching staff of Team Manitoba at the Canada Summer Games. That July, her team became the pride of the province, winning gold medals for Manitoba on home soil. Menzies would go on to receive the 2017 #WeAllPlayForCanada Award and was also a nominee for the Jack Hunt Developmental Coach Award.
In all this, Menzies has stayed firmly rooted in her Indigenous heritage. The NCCP Level 3 certified coach has served as head coach of Team Manitoba's North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Girls Volleyball - a role she has enjoyed since 2014. As part her holist approach to coaching and player development, Menzies founded Agoojin Volleyball Club in 2018; a program created to inspired, empower and develop the next generation of Indigenous leaders through sport. She is described as someone who is "excels in leveraging sport as a vehicle for social change."
As the new head coach prepares for the 2019-20 MCAC season, she can be assured that she has the confidence of the roster - a group that is expected to boast twelve returning players, including fifth-year team captain and conference co-MVP, Jana Klassen. "We are all very excited to hear that Jayme will be taking over the role of head coach next season. She fosters a positive team environment by establishing good relationships with her players and uses her knowledge of the game to provide helpful feedback for the growth and development of the team. She is an excellent communitor, a well-respected leader and has a good understanding of our capabilities. I am confident that she will help us both individually and as a team in reaching our goals."
