High Expectations for Men's Volleyball Season Starts With A Strong Preseason

A confident, veteran group is more than ready to start their 2016-17 preseason and to find out exactly what they are up against when the matches take on meaning later this month for Men's Volleyball.

Two senior members of the rotation, fourth-year setter Jason Friesen and fellow fourth-year left side Joel Kliewer, will lead CMU into the Red River College Invitational this weekend beginning with their opening matches tomorrow night against Les Rouges de USB and later against the 2016 MCAC Champions, Providence Pilots.

"This year I think winning matches will mainly be about us, staying focused on our own game," said Kliewer, "I don't think it matters who we are playing against, we know we can win a lot of games."

The competition will pick up for the upcoming MCAC season for the Blazers, as the conference has been strengthened by the return to conference play of both the USB Rouges and the Winnipeg College Wesmen. The re-introduction of the two programs will boost CMU's league schedule back to twenty matches and has created a buzz of excitement around the team.

"It is huge to have these programs back," said Friesen, "we didn't get the number of games that we were anticipating last season so having these teams return, and with our expectation that they will both be competitive, it gives us a lot of double-game weekends and will keep us on our game because of there is so much more in the schedule."

The remainder of the Blazers first preseason weekend schedule will see CMU play three matches on Saturday beginning at 10:30am when the Blazers will face the host Rebels, followed by a meeting with the ACC Cougars at 1:30pm and finally against the College Wesmen at 3:00pm.

Men's Volleyball departs for Toronto next Thursday for an exhibition match against the Seneca Sting followed by the Sting Challenge Cup, October 14-15 where the Blazers meet the Niagara Knights, Sheridan Bruins, Durham Lords and Mohawk Moutaineers.
