Former Rebels MVP Brings Pedigree To Already Strong CMU Squad

A former Red River Rebels Most Valuable Player and a 2017-18 MCAC All-Conference selection, Alex Castro has signed his letter of intent to wear green and gold this season where he will reunite with several former teammates including CMU head coach Anderson Pereira.

A product of the FC Northwest youth system, Castro and the Winnipeg-based club represented Manitoba in 2012 and brought home a National u18 Championship. After graduating from Sisler High School in 2013, the versatile technician spent two years at Red River College with the Rebels, one of those seasons in the same roster as his new head coach, where he impressed.

"Alex is a leader and a winner. I know him very well and I know he will be one of the main players on the team this season," commented Pereira, who is preparing for his third season at CMU. "His understanding of the game combined with his skills and hard work makes him a quality all-around player and the true representation of a team player."

After captaining Red River in his last MCAC season, Castro has demonstrated his commitment and love of the game by staying on with the Rebels as an assistant coach for two seasons before taking an opportunity to head coach with FC Northwest, where he now leads the u17 premier girls.

On top of that, Castro is an accomplished and well-travel referee with the Manitoba Soccer Association and has represented Canada as an official at various Pro Youth Academy Tournaments around the world including some very elite clubs, the likes of Juventus, Benfica, Porto and Aberdeen in China, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Finally, Castro is three-time provincial champion on the futsal court with Pereira's club team, Pioneers FC. The newest Blazer combined with current CMU futsal stars Matheus Moreno and Victor Hugo along with recently graduated MCAC Futsal MVP Ryan Jensen, to win the 2020 MSA Futsal Cup after capturing the cup in 2018 and 2019 as well.

Manitoba is now less than a week away from the start of Phase 3 of the MSA's approved Return to Play plan. 11 a-side soccer is scheduled to kickoff officially on July 13th. This summer, Castro will be lacing his boots up in the Manitoba Major Soccer League's third division with Pescara.

The MCAC is expected to release their 2020 regular season schedule in the coming days. As one of only two CCAA conferences prepared to compete this Fall and the cancellation of a 2020 CCAA National Soccer Championships already announced, the national organization recently voted in favor of the removing eligibility consumption in 2020-21 for all athletes competing in the CCAA.
