Fans Entertained With Home Win To Open Women's Volleyball Regular Season

CMU did not disappoint on Wednesday night in their regular season home opener, pounding the visiting Providence Pilots in straight sets (25-7, 25-23, 25-16) to open the new campaign on top, much to the delight of a full house in the Loewen Athletic Centre.

Renee Desroches held the reigns for the Blazers offense and spread out her arsenal perfectly in the opening set. Outside hitters Sadie McTavish, Jana Klassen and Jess Edel each counted 2 kills while the third-year setter scored 2 herself, the result of setter-dumps. From the service line, McTavish held a hot hand for the hosts. The third-year transfer from the University of Winnipeg challenged the Pilots defenders with her accurate spin-serve, finding the court with 3 aces.

Providence showed their determination in the late stages of the the second set, with a run of four consecutive points to tie the score 21-21, forcing a CMU timeout. With 11 kills in the match, Klassen came up big to rally the Blazers' recovery. The fifth-year captain would count 6 kills in the set while middle blocker Chloe Friesen tallied 3 aces in the second set from the service line.

The Blazers continued their impressive season debut with a 25-16 win in the third set. Mackenzy Groot had a strong performance in the front row, counting 6 stuff blocks for her team and adding 4 kills.

The next action for CMU comes this weekend when they travel to St. Boniface on Friday night to meet the USB Rouges. The match will be the home opener for the Rouges in their 2019 MCAC season. The Blazers competed in preseason tournament action at USB in September, where the Rouges finished in first of eight teams competing.
