Di Curzio Takes Home Top Honours From Basketball Manitoba

Joe Di Curzio added one more award to his trophy cabinet last week, when Basketball Manitoba recognized the long-time CMU head coach with the prestigous Open Category Women's/Girl's Basketball Coach of the Year at their annual awards banquet (that this year had to be delivered through social media).

The "Open" category selects the top women's or girl's basketball coach from amongst community club, high school, college and university coaches in the province. Di Curzio led CMU to their third consecutive MCAC Championship in 2020 and followed it by adding CMU's first Championships banner in the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last February, when the Blazers came from behind to top the Providence Pilots in overtime. The Blazers joined the NIAC conference in 2016.

"We are really proud of Joe and grateful for the strong leadership he gives to our Women's Basketball program," said CMU Director of Athletics, Russell Willms. "It is always nice to see someone who is very deserving of recognition, being presented with an award like this one. It is also very pleasing to see MCAC Basketball highlighted with two coaches receiving major awards this season. We are committed to growing the college game in Manitoba and showcasing Manitobans on the court as we work to bring MCAC Basketball into our CCAA offerings soon."

Joining Di Curzio from the MCAC as a major award winner at the Basketball Manitoba event, was Red River College Men's Basketball Coach Scott Kirkpatrick who like Di Curzio, led the Rebels to their first double-banner season, capturing both the MCAC and NIAC Championships in Men's Basketball.
