Derby Day For CMU Soccer: Providence, Away

Week 2 of the 2014 MCAC Soccer Season sees CMU travel to Otterburne on Saturday afternoon to renew aquaintances dating back to the days CMBC and Providence Bible College, when green battled navy on the pitch in the old Manitoba Christian Colleges Athletic Assocation.

The CMU men are coming off a somewhat disappointing loss to the Red River Rebels in Week 1. The Blazers dominated in both possession and chances, but failed to convert with the game on the line, succumbing on two free-kicks, a moment of miscommunication and a scoreline of 3-2.

Shining bright were the comination of Cole Johnson (pictured) and Imran Kamara who picked up 2014 where they left off 2013, combining to create chances for teammates and score goals themselves. Karama opened his 2014 goal scoring account on a cross from Johnson to put the Blazers ahead in the 7th minute and an hour later produced a deja-vu goal to bring the Blazers level and collect his first two-goal game in his four-year collegiate career.

On the other side of the ball, the CMU women are coming off a great defensive first-half performance against the Rebels, but tired legs and inexperience saw Red River capitalizing on three second-half chances to defeat the Blazers 3-0. The Rebels were returning from a preseason tournament in Minnesota that produced good results for the team and allowed RRC to carry confidence into their MCAC season opener.

Rookie Head Coach Deanna Zantingh has continued to focus on conditioning and team-play during training this week and hopes to catch a few breaks along the way when they meet Providence tomorrow. The Blazers haven't defeated the Pilots in Otterburne since the 2009 Women's Soccer Final when CMU captured their last conference banner.

On Sunday, the Pilots travel to Brandon to welcome MCAC's newest soccer program to regular season play, when they kick-off at Vincent Massey Collegiate against the BU Bobcats. CMU will welcome Brandon University's West-Man cousins, the ACC Cougars, to the Winnipeg Soccer Complex for home matches scheduled for noon (women) and 2pm (men).
