Bruised Blazers Begin New Season With Two Wins Over Trinity

The injury bug effecting women's basketball has now officially been carried from the preseason into the regular season but it didn't stop CMU from collecting two wins in their first weekend of NIAC play in Ellendale last weekend, despite their reduced roster.

Fourth year guard Jessica Marx-Houndle led by example on Sunday, scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 rebounds as CMU topped the Trinity Lions 67-48. The Blazers' success was in now way a small feat. CMU entered the weekend action without the services of 2019 leading scorer and NIAC women's basketball Most Valuable Player Julia Schatkowsky and third-year forward Carley Matkowski. Madison Wood also came up big in the win, scoring 14 points while adding 8 rebounds and 4 steals.

Saturday's win came a day after the Blazers opened their 2019-20 NIAC season with a 57-42 win over Trinity. Added to the joy of overcoming injuries and taking two victories, CMU had a point to prove to the Lions who upset the top-ranked Blazers in the semi-final of the 2019 NIAC Women's Basketball Championships last February.

More good news for the Blazers came by way of Keirra Skolnik's return to action. Though playing only in limited minutes, the second-year forward saw 11 minutes of court time, scoring 8 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. CMU expects to have Schatkowsky back on November 22-23 when they host the Free Lutheran Conquerors while Matkowski's return will be on hold until early January.
